As one of the most active research universities in the nation, the University of Georgia relies heavily on statistics, data, and data collection through surveys and experimentation.
The Statistics major at UGA prepares students for a statistical career by developing analytical, research, and presentation skills; mastering new and classic statistical ideas; and developing innovative statistical analysis and sampling techniques through problem solving and new technologies. Students tailor their coursework toward one of two areas of specialization: 1) Data Analysis - preparation for a statistical career; or 2) Mathematical Statistics – preparation for graduate school or further training.
Careers exist in business and industry (e.g. information technology, finance, marketing, quality control); health and medicine (e.g. pharmaceuticals, biotech, public health, medical research); and government (e.g. the Environmental Protection Agency, Bureau of Labor Statistics, Census Bureau, and U.S. Department of Agriculture) with job titles such as insurance actuaries, data analysts, and statistical consultants.
