About Bachelor of Physics

Physics has led to many of the world's most exciting inventions, from computers and the World Wide Web, to lasers and X-ray technology. But when it comes to the natural laws of the physical universe, there is still much to be discovered.

In this program, you will study the nature and behavior of matter and energy, with a focus on classical mechanics, electricity and magnetism, modern physics, quantum mechanics and thermal physics. You will learn to apply this knowledge to solve complex scientific puzzles in medicine, technology, energy and many other areas.

Physics majors gain hands-on experience designing and conducting experiments using the very latest research techniques and computer technologies. The department also offers special research opportunities through the department's Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) program, sponsored by the National Science Foundation.

Requirements and Admission Criteria for Bachelor of Physics at University of Idaho

Entry Requirements

If you are a freshman or first-year student:

Undergraduate applicants who have no previous work at the post-secondary level must have at least a 2.5 grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) from a secondary school. Students must also meet the criteria for admission to university-level study in their home country.

If you are a transfer student:

Undergraduate applicants who have attended a post-secondary institution and have completed at least 14 transferable semester credits at an accredited institution must present a minimum grade point average of 2.0 for all post-secondary work. For admission into the College of Engineering, transfer students must have a cumulative grade point average of at least 2.8. Other departments may have additional requirements. Students who have completed fewer than 14 transferable semester credits (post-secondary) must meet the freshman or first-year student requirements in addition to the transfer student requirements.
