The pre-physical therapy (PT) focus is an advising program to help students select courses and become well prepared for application to physical therapy school.

The steps toward your career as a physical therapist begin by taking the required pre-PT courses, completing your undergraduate degree, and gaining required clinical experience. Course work will include chemistry, physics, anatomy, physiology, biology, psychology and statistics. Common pre-PT majors include biology, exercise science, psychology, and nutrition. You will also need to seek out volunteer opportunities to shadow physical therapists and to work with patients in a variety of clinical settings.

Completing these steps are prerequisites for applying to a Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) program for three additional years of specialized training.

Requirements and Admission Criteria for Certificate in Pre-Physical Therapy at University of Idaho

Entry Requirements

If you are a freshman or first-year student:

Undergraduate applicants who have no previous work at the post-secondary level must have at least a 2.5 grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) from a secondary school. Students must also meet the criteria for admission to university-level study in their home country.

If you are a transfer student:

Undergraduate applicants who have attended a post-secondary institution and have completed at least 14 transferable semester credits at an accredited institution must present a minimum grade point average of 2.0 for all post-secondary work. For admission into the College of Engineering, transfer students must have a cumulative grade point average of at least 2.8. Other departments may have additional requirements. Students who have completed fewer than 14 transferable semester credits (post-secondary) must meet the freshman or first-year student requirements in addition to the transfer student requirements.
