The English Teaching Concentration is designed for English Majors who wish to teach English in middle and secondary schools (grades 5-12).

Program Requirements
The program requires six English courses (18 credits). Three courses are teaching-focused and three are electives.
- ONE language-focused course:
- ENGL 242: Grammar for Writers
- ENGL 440: History of the English Language
- ONE literacy-focused course:
- ENGL 448: Perspectives on Literacy
- ENGL 459: Seminar for Tutors
- ONE methods course:
- ENGL 450: Teaching Literature
- ENGL 451: Teaching Writing
- ENGL 452: Teaching English with Digital Technology
- THREE upper-level content courses:
- ENGL 300/400-level literature course
- ENGL 300/400-level writing course
- ENGL 300/400-level film course
All students must meet with the Director of English Teaching to plan a program of study that ensures broad exposure to topics and genres most relevant to Middle and Secondary school curricula. At the discretion of the Director of English Teaching, suitable courses from the College of Education and Human Development (CEHD) may be counted toward the requirement.
Teaching License
Students who want to pursue initial teaching licensure will take English courses in tandem with courses required by the Undergraduate Education Minor program in the College of Education and Human Development (CEHD).
LICENSURE PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS
Students who wish to complete the requirements for an initial teaching license must also do the following:
- Complete the six courses required for the Secondary Education Minor program in the College of Education & Human Development (CEHD). Students must also contact advisors in CEHD.
- Complete the licensure program requirements:
- Rethinking Equity in the Teaching of English Language Learners (RETELL) course
- MTELs (Massachusetts Test for Educator Licensure)
- Communication and Literacy Test
- English Subject Test
- Pre-practicum (Observation): 150 field placement hours
- Practicum (Student Teaching): 300 hours of student teaching
Other Requirements
- Students must receive a minimum grade of C minus in all courses.
- Courses cannot be taken as pass/fail.
- Five courses must be completed in residence at UMass Boston.
- One course can be transferred in with permission of the English Undergraduate Program Director.
