The minor in Japanese consist of SIX courses.
Intermediate language requirement (2 courses):

- JAPAN 202
If a student places out of JAPAN 201 and/or 202, they must substitute it/them with content courses listed below or related courses approved by the minor advisors or department chair.
Advanced Intermediate language requirement (2 courses):
- JAPAN 301
- JAPAN 302
If a student places out of JAPAN 301 and/or 302 (in addition to JAPAN 201 and 202), they must substitute it/them with upper-level content courses listed below (300 or higher) or related courses approved by the minor advisors or department chair.
Non-language (content/culture) course electives (2 courses):
Students must choose 2 courses from the list below and use them as Japanese minor electives.

Important Policies:
- Please note that all students will be required to complete six courses regardless of their language proficiency when they enter the program.
- No course fulfilling the requirements for the minor may be taken pass/fail.
- The maximum number of transfer courses that can be counted toward the minor is 3.
- Only one course in the Japanese minor can be double-counted toward any other major.
Requirements fo the Japanese Minor (declared prior to Fall 2017)
The Japanese minor consists of seven courses: three required core courses, two upper level language courses, and two electives.
N.B. If the student places out of JAPAN 201, the required number of courses will be six. If the student places out of both JAPAN 201 and 202, the required number of courses will be six (in this case the student must take an additional course at 200-level or above from the departmental course listings–see below).
Required Core Courses:
- JAPAN 201 (Intermediate Japanese I)
- JAPAN 202 (Intermediate Japanese II), and
One other 200-level course on Japanese culture from the Department's offering
Students who place above JAPAN 201: as stated above, the total number of required courses will be six.
Student who place above JAPAN 202: students in this category must take an additional elective course at the 200- or 300-level chosen from the approved list of departmental and non-departmental courses (see below).
2 courses beyond Japan 201-202 must be taken within the department.
Upper Level:
- JAPAN 301 (Advanced Japanese)
- JAPAN 302 (Readings in Japanese)
Elective:
Two courses in English from a list approved by the department (consisting of departmental and non-departmental courses at the 200-level or higher). No more than one can be a non-departmental course or transfer course from another institution.
Only one course in the Japanese Minor can be double-counted toward any other Major. Courses taken P/F cannot be counted toward the Minor
