Music Mission
As part of the Performing Arts Department, the Music Program welcomes students from our international campus community and provides a comprehensive education in preparation for careers in music and teaching. A dynamic faculty fosters an environment of academic and musical excellence within a liberal arts curriculum, and provides students with the tools to develop an understanding of a wide variety of musical genres, practices, and pedagogies.

Goals and Objectives:
As part of its commitment to maintain accreditation with NEASC and the DESE, the Music Program provides the highest quality music instruction by fostering diverse musical thinking and training. Graduates with the BA in music from UMass Boston will:
- Possess a highly developed musical intelligence that is applicable to a broad spectrum of career trajectories.
- Have proficiency on one's major instrument, on keyboard, with score reading/analysis, and in ear training/sight singing, and possess a strong foundation in both Western and non-Western musical traditions in regards to history, theory, style, application, and performance.
- Be able to contextualize the intersection of and interrelationship between music and other expressive arts such as theater and dance.
- Have acquired significant performance experience within a variety of ensemble settings and with standard and non-standard repertoire.
- Understand music in its historical, global, and creative context with significant exposure to the fields of historical musicology, ethnomusicology, and composition, respectfully.
MUSIC EDUCATION
The Music Education, Teacher Licensure Program prepares preservice teachers for P-12 certification in Massachusetts. We offer a comprehensive curriculum that addresses all aspects of the knowledge, skills, and pedagogical understanding required for culturally-relevant teaching. Course offerings include Choral and Instrumental Methods, Instrument Techniques, Conducting, Orchestration, and Special Topics including Sociocultural Perspectives for the Music Educator. Music education students have the opportunity to refine their craft as musicians by participating in traditional ensembles, such as Chorus, Chamber Singers, Chamber Orchestra, and Jazz Ensemble. In addition, students can engage in a series of non-traditional ensemble experiences including iPad Ensemble, Pop/Rock Ensemble, and Steel Drum Band.
