IMPORTANT: Social Psychology major news
Prompted by an initial decision by the Psychology Department, the Social Psychology major is being phased out effective February 2021. The decision was a very difficult one to make. The Sociology Department thought through every conceivable possibility before arriving at the same conclusion of the Psychology Department: the current resources we have in terms of faculty instructors and advisors are not sufficient to support an ongoing major, and it is unlikely that we will receive adequate support to bring in additional, critical faculty to fulfill these needs and sustain the major. It pains us greatly to arrive at this decision.
It is important for current active Social Psychology majors to know that they will be able to graduate with the major. In other words, students who declared the major prior to February 2021 and have remained an active student will be supported through their academic careers at UMass Boston in this major. Just to be clear: active declared students do not need to declare another major or do anything different. Students may proceed through the major to graduation, receiving all of the necessary advising and taking all of the necessary classes to complete the major.
Social Psychology students who have withdrawn from UMass Boston and are returning to complete their studies will not be able to reenroll into the major. Your program will be changed to College of Liberal Arts Undecided. Students in this situation should contact [email protected], an Academic Advisor in the Sociology department, for help in picking a new major.
We see great value in the major for students beyond graduation and are disappointed to arrive at this place. If you have any questions at all, please feel free to reach out to me directly at [email protected]. I'm happy to talk though any challenges you foresee or doubts that you may have about your movement forward.
