    The Program

    The Chemistry Department offers a Master of Science degree in addition to a dual degree BS/MS degree. This flexible program is designed for recent graduates and those holding positions in chemical industry, high schools and community colleges who seek advancement through further professional training. Attempts will be made to arrange schedules for those who must study part time. For students who are intent upon continuing their studies in a research-oriented graduate program, the curriculum offers the opportunity for both extensive coursework and high impact chemistry research project.. The master's program allows students to focus on a particular research area: Biological Chemistry, Green Chemistry, Inorganic Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Physical/Analytical Chemistry, or Chemistry Education.

    Note:
    i. Teaching or work experience should be completed early in the program.
    ii. Coursework consists of core courses, electives, seminars, and master's thesis credits.
    iii. Students may choose electives from external departments including Biology, Physics, and the School for the Environment.
    iv. Periodic Teaching and Research Evaluations are conducted for all graduate students, except for the semester the degree is awarded.

    SELECT RESEARCH ADVISOR

    Students are required to choose a research advisor within their first semester of enrollment in the Chemistry Graduate Program. In order to make an informed choice, students are required to speak with at least three chemistry faculty members currently conducting research within the department.

    The master's program is thesis-based. All MS students conduct original research relevant to chemistry.

    SELECT THESIS COMMITTEE

    Master's students must choose three faculty members from the Chemistry Department (including their research advisor as the chair of the committee) by the end of their first year.

    The responsibilities of a thesis committee member consist of participating in the literature seminar the oral defense of the thesis.

    CORE COURSE IN ALL CHEMISTRY DEGREES (One of these is required to be taken.)

    While one of these courses is required to be taken for the Chemistry MS, both are allowed (and encouraged). If both courses are taken, one of them will count as one of the additional five required courses for the Chemistry MS.

    CORE COURSES FOR THE MASTER'S DEGREE

    A total of six graduate courses are required for the MS degree. Besides taking one core course (above) that is required for all chemistry graduate degrees, five additional courses must be taken. Any other Chemistry graduate courses are permitted. Of the five, up to two graduate courses are permitted to be taken outside the Chemistry Department with approval by the Graduate Program Director and thesis advisor. It is suggested that Chemistry MS students consider taking courses in their respective areas of concentration.

    PERIODIC  GRADUATE STUDENT  TEACHING AND RESEARCH EVALUATIONS

    Teaching and research evaluations are completed by the department on a regular basis, to provide students with feedback on their responsibilities and degree progress. Evaluations of teaching quality are completed by instructional supervisors and departmental staff. Students and research advisors should meet regularly to set goals for research and to assess progress toward these goals. Progress on these is reported in the periodic research evaluations.

    LITERATURE SEMINAR

    All students are required to prepare a presentation based on review of the scientific literature related to a selected topic of current chemical interest. The literature seminar must be completed within the first two semesters of matriculation.

    THESIS & DEFENSE

    The master's thesis is based on original scientific work, conducted under the close supervision of a faculty advisor.

    A private oral exam between the student and Graduate Committee will be held following the defense in order to establish the student's understanding of the research. Passing of the defense in conjunction with publishing the thesis through the Office of Graduate Studies will result in the awarding of the MS degree in Chemistry.

    Entry Requirements

    GPA

    A minimum, cumulative GPA of 2.75 on a 4.0 scale (or international equivalent) in all undergraduate work. Please note that some programs may require a supplemental list of coursework and/or discipline specific GPA calculation. Please review your programs’ requirements to confirm.

    Bachelor's Degree

    At the time of enrollment, a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited U.S. institution of recognized standing or an international equivalent. International applicants must submit evidence that they have completed the equivalent of a regionally accredited, U.S. university-level bachelor’s degree program. Most international 3-year degrees, including the Indian Bachelor of Arts, Sciences and Commerce degrees, are not considered to be equivalent.

    The nonrefundable application fee is $75.

    No application fee for UMass Boston alumni! UMass Boston alumni and current students that plan to complete degree requirements prior to graduate enrollment can submit the application without paying the application fee.

    Official Transcripts

    Official transcripts for all institutions where you have earned more than 6 credits. Most transcripts can be requested electronically through the Centralized Application System (CAS). Original hardcopy transcripts must be sealed in an envelope from the issuing institution.

    Test Scores

    • Some programs require official GRE or GMAT test scores. Please review program requirements to confirm.
    • Applicants who completed undergraduate coursework outside of the United States may be required to submit English proficiency test results, even if they are permanent residents or citizen of the U.S. Please review the international applicant page.
    • UMass Boston’s institution code is 3924. We can only accept official score reports sent electronically or in hardcopy directly from the testing agency.
    • In accordance with Massachusetts state law, Office of Graduate Studies and Graduate Admissions policy permits residents of Massachusetts who have been diagnosed as developmentally disabled (including those with specific language disabilities, such as dyslexia, but not including those whose sole disability is blindness) to request a waiver of the requirement to submit GRE, GMAT, or MAT scores. To qualify for a waiver, an applicant must submit documentation of their disability.     Letters of Recommendation

    • The number of letters required varies by program. Please review program requirements. The recommenders you identify will receive an email with instructions upon submission of the online application.
    • Typically, one or more letters from former professors familiar with your academic abilities provide the strongest recommendations. Recommenders should have worked closely with the applicant in an academic, professional, or community service setting. Letters should not be written by friends or family members of the applicant. Letters should focus on the applicant’s abilities and past academic performance, while also indicating an ability to effectively complete graduate-level coursework.

    Statement of Purpose

    The statement of purpose is your opportunity to show the graduate admissions committee why you wish to pursue graduate study, as well as your specific interests and goals. In general the first part of your statement (about 300 words) shares your reason for wanting to attend graduate school while the second part (about 1200 word) indicates your specific interest and the kind of work you would like to do in your intended field. The program to which you are applying may have other instructions regarding the content and nature of this statement. You will be able to upload your Statement of Purpose to your application in .doc or .pdf form.
