About Bachelor of Ethnic Studies

Ethnic Studies is an 18-unit interdisciplinary minor housed within the Department of Gender, Race and Identity (GRI). Students in the minor study race, ethnicity, and Indigeneity in historical and contemporary contexts and global and local settings. The major is grounded in an intersectional perspective, attending to the interrelationship of race, ethnicity, and Indigeneity with other forms of identity, difference, and power that include gender, sexuality, class, citizenship, nationality, religion, ability status, and other categories. Our course program critically analyzes the construction of racial, ethnic, and Indigenous identities and communities in global and local contexts; examines racism and antiracism; and addresses key theories in studies of race, ethnicity, and Indigeneity. The Ethnic Studies minor provides an expressly interdisciplinary environment for learning, drawing widely on academic traditions in the social sciences and the humanities. Students gain tools to critically analyze and engage our world and to enact change in their communities and professions.

This minor is not open to students pursuing a major in Gender, Race and Identity (Ethnic Studies Specialization). It is, however, open to students in the general major in Gender, Race and Identity or the major in Gender, Race, and Identity (Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies Specialization), as well as to other majors in the CLA and at UNR.

How to Apply for Bachelor of Ethnic Studies at University of Nevada, Reno

Step one: Create your application account

Applications for admission are submitted via the University's online application portal.

After entering the required registration information, you will receive an automatic email with a temporary registration PIN. When you receive your PIN, you can complete the registration process that allows you to access your online application for admission.

Step two: Complete your application for admission

The application portal will guide you through your online application specific to your student type^*. Once finished, verify your information and click the “Finalize application and pay” button (link) to proceed to payment page.

Your application is not finalized until you submit your application fee.

^*Returning students must complete a returning student application for readmission to the University.

Step three: Pay your application fee

After finalizing your online application, you'll be prompted to pay a non-refundable $60 application fee, payable by credit card (Visa or Mastercard only). The application fee is only valid for the semester in which you apply and cannot be deferred or transferred to another semester. Application fee deferrals may be available.

Step four: Check confirmation emails and register your MyNEVADA account

Once payment is made a confirmation email will be sent immediately. Check your spam folder if not received and mark unr.edu as a safe sender to ensure future receipt of emails. An email containing MyNEVADA student portal activation information will be sent 24 to 48 hours after submitting the application and payment.

The email sent 24 to 48 hours later will contain your student ID number and steps to create your MyNEVADA account. This account provides access to your student application dashboard, allows you to check your application status, accept or deny admission (if offered), review your fees, make payments and more.

Step five: Submit your supporting documentation

After completing your online application for admission, you can gather and submit the additional documentation required to finalize your application package.
