Today's students are understandably more focused on environmental issues than were previous generations.

At a time when climate issues are pressing, this minor offers you an opportunity to study the work of essential writers and artists while developing their own voices and adding to the greater conversation about the environment and our coastline.

Students in the creative writing major and journalism minor have expressed interest in the new minor, and faculty in the arts and sciences made it happen.

Demonstrate knowledge of critical coastal and environmental issues and communicate those stories to general and specialized audiences in compelling ways

Compose and critically evaluate diverse forms of journalism, advocacy, legal, and strategic writing relevant to coastal communities and environmental issues

Use and hone the research, interviewing, writing, and oral-presentation skills that are emphasized through the coursework, drawing from individuals, locations and organizations in the Cape Fear region and along the Carolina coast

- If the applicant wishes to receive academic credit, these transcripts (unless from a U.S. institution) must be evaluated by an accredited credential evaluation service. The applicant must choose a company that belongs to the National Association of Credential Evaluators (NACES).
TOEFL, IELTS, Duolingo English Test, or Pearson Test of English score unless:
- English is applicant's native language.
- Applicant has completed 2 college-level courses in English composition at a U.S. college or university with a grade of B or higher.
- A student successfully completes Level 4 in UNCW's ESL program.
