Research-Focused Program

The Chemistry M.S. is a research-focused program that will prepare you for further graduate school or a career in chemistry through mentored independent research and advanced coursework.

The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry offers research-centered Master programs in Chemistry and Pharmaceutical Chemistry. The objectives of this program are to give students who have an undergraduate foundation in chemistry the opportunity to engage in advanced course work, in-depth study and independent research.

Students work on cutting-edge research projects in Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Marine and Atmospheric Science, Biochemistry, Organic and Inorganic Synthesis, Analytical Chemistry, Computational and Physical Chemistry, and Chemical Education. Much of this research results in publications in peer reviewed journals or presentations at professional meetings, most of which have student co-authors.

The close supervision and mentoring of students by faculty (ca. 1.5: 1) is the key to the success of the alumni in their Ph.D. study and industry careers.

To be eligible for admission for graduate study at the University of North Carolina Wilmington applicants must:

Grade Point Average: Have a strong overall academic record with a B average or better in the basic courses prerequisite to the area of proposed graduate study. Level: Graduate and undergraduate programs may not be pursued simultaneously.
Online Accelerated Programs (OAP): OAP programs must be pursued independent of any other program.
Additional Requirements: Meet any additional admission requirement(s) as outlined by the graduate program.
