The Master of Coastal and Ocean Policy (MCOP) is a professional, non-thesis, interdisciplinary degree program that immerses students in a unique curriculum aimed at advancing technical knowledge of coastal and ocean processes and resources as well as the tools and concepts of the policy making.

Through elective choices students develop expertise in specific areas of interest while exploring the role of science and expertise in policy making about the coasts and oceans.

MCOP students come from a wide range of academic and professional backgrounds.

Graduates from STEM disciplines (science, technology, engineering and math) who wish to advance their expertise while also broadening their scope of knowledge to include the social sciences and public policy
Graduates from social sciences who wish to complement their knowledge base with relevant natural and physical sciences while developing skills in policy analysis
Those interested in exploring the nexus of science and society at the graduate level as it pertains to coastal and ocean policy and the rapidly growing blue economy

Explore how the political landscape shapes the role of science and expertise in policymaking

Develop skills in policy analysis, public budgeting, environmental economics, and nongovernmental organization management

Entry Requirements

To be eligible for admission for graduate study at the University of North Carolina Wilmington applicants must:

Regionally Accredited Bachelor's Degree: Hold a bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited college or university in this country or its equivalent in a foreign institution (as evaluated course-by-course through a NACES approved credit evaluation service) by the first official day of classes for the term of the application.

Grade Point Average: Have a strong overall academic record with a B average or better in the basic courses prerequisite to the area of proposed graduate study. Level: Graduate and undergraduate programs may not be pursued simultaneously.
Online Accelerated Programs (OAP): OAP programs must be pursued independent of any other program.
Additional Requirements: Meet any additional admission requirement(s) as outlined by the graduate program.
