About Master of Environmental Studies & Middle Grades Education Specialization

Dual Degree Program

The dual degree program is offered jointly by the College of Arts and Sciences' Department of Environmental Sciences and Watson College of Education's Middle Grades Education Program. Students completing this program will earn two separate degrees: 1. Master of Science in Environmental Studies - Environmental Education and Interpretation concentration 2. Master of Arts in Teaching Middle Grades – Science Concentration

2 Years

Students will earn both degrees in two years as opposed to four years if enrolled separately. This degree option is specifically for students who wish to work in in environmental science education – a discipline at the intersection of environmental science and public education. Potential post-graduation opportunities include careers in nonprofit organizations focused on environmental issues, nonformal science settings, and teaching Middle Grades Science in public schools, an area of high need in North Carolina.

5 Internship Experiences

To ensure that students employ skills and knowledge gained in each program within applied settings, internships are required by each program. Both internships provide extended opportunities for fieldwork, research or creative projects and help the student to bridge related theory with practical applications. Students should enroll in both internships near the completion of the program. EVS 597 - Practicum in Environmental Sciences Credit Hours: 1 To 6 (minimum 3 credit hours required for this program) LIC 511 - Middle Grades Internship Credit Hours: 6

Grade Point Average: Have a strong overall academic record with a B average or better in the basic courses prerequisite to the area of proposed graduate study. Provisional admission may be considered by some programs. Contact the program coordinator for additional information regarding their acceptance policy.
Level: Graduate and undergraduate programs may not be pursued simultaneously.
Online Accelerated Programs (OAP): OAP programs must be pursued independent of any other program.
Additional Requirements: Meet any additional admission requirement(s) as outlined by the graduate program.
