About Master of Geography

Master's students in geography are expected to develop a broad background in the discipline of geography, in-depth knowledge in an area of emphasis, and the ability to conduct and report independent research, including the use of appropriate geographic techniques.

MA and MS students have interests in physical geography, human geography, geographic information science, and intersections among these areas. The area of emphasis may combine more than one traditional subfield of geography.

Although the department requires knowledge of the fundamentals of geography, it welcomes students whose undergraduate work has been in other disciplines that can apply their training to geographic problems.

The program is designed so that students should be able to complete requirements and complete the master's thesis within two years.

All master's students take a two-term seminar sequence of Theory and Practice in Geography (GEOG 611 and 612), Research Design (GEOG 613), two specialized seminars (GEOG 607), and an approved course in qualitative or quantitative methods.

The program prepares students for research or teaching occupations and for a variety of occupations in the private sector.
