About Master of Nursing

The Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) Program is designed to meet the Essentials of Baccalaureate Education for Professional Nursing Practice, established by the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) to provide a curriculum development framework as well as a definition of competencies universally expected of BSN graduates.

The Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) helps BSN graduates keep pace with the changing demands of healthcare and the nursing profession. It provides an organized sequential plan of study that leads to preparation in a specialized nursing role. An online option is available in Clinical Nurse Leader and Nursing Informatics.

The Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) prepares BSN and MSN graduates within a specialized advanced clinical focus (Adult-Gerontology Clinical Nurse Specialist, Nurse-Midwife, Nurse Anesthesia, Nurse Practitioner) or systems focus (Health Systems Executive Leadership). The DNP focuses on practice that is innovative and evidence-based, reflecting the critical appraisal and application of research. Graduates are prepared as nursing leaders for the highest levels of nursing practice. An online option is available for nurses with a masters degree in the same focus as the area being pursued. The online option in Health Systems Executive Leadership is also available for nurses with a BSN and masters degree or MSN.

The dual degree Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) / Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) offers BSN prepared nurses the opportunity to simultaneously achieve their DNP and PhD degrees. The dual degree plan shares 30 credits between both degrees. Students complete both a DNP capstone project and PhD dissertation, focusing their research on the implementation-translational-clinical end of the spectrum. Certificates provide an educational opportunity for professional nurses to enhance and expand their role and increase marketability. Certificate credits may be applied to a future University of Pittsburgh School of Nursing graduate degree. Certificates are available in clinical practice and nurse specialty roles. Online options include Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner (w/ 2 onsite lab intensives: 2 days-summer + 1 day-fall), Gerontology for Nurse Practitioners, Nursing Informatics, Nursing Research, and School Nurse PK-12.

Entry Requirements

The minimum requirement for admission to a graduate program is the completion of a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution in the United States or the completion of education that the University of Pittsburgh deems comparable to a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution in the United States.

Applicants are required to submit official original academic credentials. Official original academic credentials that are issued in a language other than English must be accompanied by a certified English translation. In cases where the transcript (grade report, academic record, examination results, mark sheet) does not attest to the awarding of a degree or an academic qualification, a certified copy of the original certificate or diploma awarding the degree or qualification must also be submitted. Certificates or diplomas that are issued in a language other than English must be accompanied by a certified English translation.

Verification of English Language Proficiency for undergraduate applicants is determined by the Office of Admission and Financial Aid at the University of Pittsburgh. Verification is required unless the following apply: The applicant is a citizen of a country whose official language is English. The applicant has completed a degree program at a regionally accredited institution in the U.S. The applicant is not a citizen of a country whose official language is English but has completed a degree program at an institution outside of the U.S. where the language of instruction is English and where the official national language of the country in which the institution is located is English.

Please submit one of the following:

Self-Reported Academic Record (SRAR). We encourage you to complete the SRAR rather than sending a transcript to improve application processing time. Please note that we will compare your SRAR to your official high school transcript if you enroll at Pitt. Accuracy in completing the SRAR is very important. Discrepancies and misrepresentations could result in the Admissions Committee revoking your admissions decision.
Original or certified, official secondary school records from grades 9-11 (transcripts, marksheets, certificates, examination results, etc.) and any national/state examination results required in your country. You will also need to send literal translations of your records if they are not in English. If your secondary record only includes grades 10-12, please submit the third year of your middle school transcript. Note: Students may be required to complete a transcript evaluation.

We’re a test-friendly institution, which means that we will take your highest ACT composite score and your highest SAT superscore. We don’t require the SAT Essay or ACT Writing scores.
