About Bachelor of Social Work

The University of South Florida offers a program of study leading to a Bachelor of Social Work (B.S.W.) degree in the School of Social Work, College of Behavioral & Community Sciences. The B.S.W. has been developed in accordance with the guidelines of the Council on Social Work Education, the national accrediting body for social work education programs, and in accordance with the recommendations of the National Association of Social Workers (NASW). The B.S.W. program is fully accredited by the Council on Social Work Education. The BSW program has as its primary objective to prepare and graduate professionals for entry level positions in areas such as mental health, aging services, or residential treatment. The secondary objectives of the B.S.W. program are to:

Provide for the social work human resources needs of the university service district (the central Florida west coast area), the State of Florida, and the Southeast Region;
Provide an exposure to social work as a profession and to contemporary issues in the social welfare field;
Prepare graduates for additional professional training at the graduate level in social work or in related human service professions.

In preparing the BSW graduate for beginning professional practice, the curriculum provides students with an opportunity to develop a knowledge base and skill base as a "generalist" practitioner. Students will develop an understanding of various methods of intervention and skills and how to apply these to a variety of client systems. Intervention methods that students will learn may take the form of case management, individual and group counseling, resource development, consultation, teaching, advocacy, etc. Client systems in this context include individuals, families, groups, organizations, or communities. Students in the BSW program will develop an understanding of the dynamics of human behavior in individual, group and organizational contexts and the influences of the socio-cultural and spiritual environments / influences upon human behavior. Students in the BSW program will also learn about the development of social welfare systems and institutions and about the social, economic, and political processes, policy development and program implementation that impact client systems. Students will develop an understanding of the utilization of basic social research skills particularly related to the processes of problem-solving, planning, and evaluation. Students in the BSW program will also gain awareness of the social work profession's value base, engage in self-examination and reflection to empower their ethical and effective application of social work values in professional practice. The BSW program places great emphasis on the development of a professionally responsible graduate in terms of one's obligations to the client system served, the profession itself, the organization in which one works, and to the general public.

Certified Global Pathways Program
This Bachelor of Social Work (B.S.W.) program is certified as a Global Pathway program. Global Pathway programs have significant global content that align with the goals of USF's Quality Enhancement Plan, the Global Citizens Project. USF fosters three primary qualities that global citizens possess, i.e., global awareness, global responsibility and global participation. These are consistent with social work values. Study abroad opportunities are available through the School of Social Work and have included travel to India, Spain, and Peru. Requirements and Admission Criteria for Bachelor of Social Work at University of South Florida

Entry Requirements

If you completed secondary education in any country outside the U.S., USF requires that you submit the appropriate documents that are the equivalent of graduation from high school in the U.S. As a general rule, completion of secondary education will consist of 12-13 years of study and the awarding of a diploma or graduation certificate. Please include academic transcripts and exam results of all secondary work.

SAT/ACT Requirements

USF requires freshman applicants to submit official results of at least one college entrance exam (SAT or ACT). USF does not currently require or consider the optional essay section of the SAT or the ACT for the admission or scholarship review processes. Likewise, SAT subject tests are not considered for admission or placement. USF's code for SAT is 5828 and for ACT is 0761.

USF considers your highest submitted section scores across all SAT and ACT test dates. Final admission decisions will be made using only your highest cumulative scores. Each time you submit test scores to USF, we will update your record with any new high scores. We strongly encourage you to submit your scores each time you take the SAT or ACT. Sending your scores each time you take the SAT or ACT can benefit you by allowing us to consider you for all available enrollment-related opportunities.

Testing Recommendations

Because the SAT and ACT measure college readiness through different means and formats, we strongly encourage you to take each exam once during the spring of your junior year in high school. You are likely to prefer (and even to perform better) on one test over the other, which would allow you to focus on that test during the fall of your senior year. Except in rare cases, you should not take either test more than three times, as significant improvements on performance are unlikely at that point.

How to Apply for Bachelor of Social Work at University of South Florida

1. Submit Your Application

Complete the USF online application or the Common App application.

2. Pay Your Application Fee

Pay the nonrefundable, $30 application fee.

3. Submit Official Transcripts

Send original or certified copies of academic transcripts, mark sheets, grade reports, diplomas or certificates, national standardized examination results, or other academic course work to USF.

Include a certified English translation for all documents not written in English. If you need assistance translating your documents into English, we recommend using the American Translators Association to find a certified translator.

If you have completed all 4 years of high school in the U.S., you will need to submit your coursework and grades via the Student Self-Reported Academic Record (SSAR) website. If you have attended any overseas high school, you will need to submit your official transcripts.

4. Submit Official SAT or ACT Scores

If you are submitting ACT scores, you are required to submit scores for the Writing section, per Florida Board of Governors requirements.

USF will not accept scores from the Common App portal, your guidance counselor or PDF screenshot. Scores must come directly from SAT or ACT testing services.

5. Send Official TOEFL or Duolingo Scores

This step is only required for students from non-English speaking countries. Scores are valid for two years from the original date of examination.
