    About Master of Biological Science

Biology is a rapidly changing science that incorporates molecular and cellular biology; behavioral and molecular ecology; developmental biology; organismal, ecological and evolutionary genetics; microbiology; aerobiology; molecular systematics; and neuroscience. Flexible degree requirements lead to careers in biology, health fields and professional or graduate school.

Students work directly with faculty in a specified area of research and plan a program of courses and overall research goals in consultation with their supervising professor. We prepare these graduate students for careers in education, industry and government, or for continued graduate studies. A wide range of research opportunities are available to graduate students including basic studies in bioinformatics, cellular and molecular biology, developmental biology, ecology, genetics, microbiology, molecular systematics, neuroscience, virology and other areas. In addition to laboratory based studies, research opportunities are available at field sites in northeast Oklahoma and field stations in other locations. An in-depth understanding of one area of specialization is achieved through elective courses, independent study and dissertation research.

Biological Science The biological science degree is intended for students interested in learning the basic principles of life science as well as how general science fundamentals apply to living organisms. Many students choose to pursue biological science for their undergraduate degree in preparation for a career in health care. The biological science degree is particularly well-suited as preparation for medical school based on its foundational science and mathematics curriculum. The pre-med option is ideal for those interested in applying to medical, dental, optometry, pharmacy, physician assistant or veterinary school. A number of our graduates also choose to pursue advanced degrees (M.S., Ph.D.) in bioinformatics, plant pathology, epidemiology, physiology, and neurobiology to name just a few. All students are encouraged to take advantage of undergraduate research opportunities that are available in a broad range of areas that include virology, microbiology, neuroscience, ecology, population and evolutionary biology, and genetics.

Master of Science in Biological Sciences (Thesis Track)

The focus of the program is to offer quality graduate level courses in advanced topics in biological science and graduate M.S. students prepared for an advanced degree program (e.g. M.D., D.O., Pharm.D., D.D.S) including those with a research focus (e.g. Ph.D), or research technician positions in industry or academia. Graduating students will be able to:

    1. Conduct original research of significant magnitude for publication.
    2. Exhibit knowledge of the scientific study undertaken beyond that expected of a technician.
    3. Write up and defend research results.

Master of Science in Biological Sciences (Non-Thesis Track)

The focus of the program is to offer quality graduate level courses in advanced topics in biological science and graduate M.S. students prepared for non-research positions or advanced degree programs not involving research (e.g. M.D., D.O., Pharm.D., D.D.S). Graduating students will be able to:

    1. Exhibit knowledge beyond the B.S. level within a selected special focus area of biological science.
    2. Effectively give an oral presentation on the selected area of focus.

Doctor of Philosophy in Biological Sciences

The program's focus is to offer quality graduate level courses in advanced topics in biology, and to graduate Ph.D. students prepared for leadership roles in both academia and industry. Graduating students will have:

    1. An in-depth understanding of a particular set of sub-fields within the biological sciences, which involves both knowledge of the literature and analytical ability to relate existing studies to alternative theories.
    2. Conducted original research, with a leadership role in the experimental design, and the research will be of a magnitude that it could lead to several publications.
    3. Developed communication skills to function successfully in the scientific community.
    4. Developed research skills to the degree that they can work as independent scientists.

    Entry Requirements

    Who is Eligible to Apply?

If you have completed your undergraduate degree (bachelor's or equivalent) or will have completed it prior to your intended matriculation date at Yale, you may apply to the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences (GSAS).

A master's degree is not required to apply for a Ph.D. at Yale, although some programs give preference to applicants with post-baccalaureate training. Consult your program of interest directly for information on how it evaluates applications.

We value diversity of all kinds at the Graduate School, and we encourage students from all backgrounds to apply if Yale is a good fit for your intellectual and professional goals. All are welcome to apply, without regard to citizenship or immigration status, socioeconomic level, race, religion, gender identification, sexual orientation, disability, etc.

    English Program Requirements

TOEFL or IELTS is required of most applicants whose native language is not English.

If you have received (or will receive) an undergraduate degree from a college or university where English is the primary language of instruction, and if you have studied in residence at that institution for at least three years, you are exempt from the English Language Test requirement and are not required to submit the TOEFL or IELTS

No exemptions are made on the basis of an advanced degree (e.g. M.A./M.S. or Ph.D.) from any institution.

When you complete your application, you will answer questions about your native language and the primary language of instruction at your baccalaureate institution. If either was English, you will not be required to submit TOEFL or IELTS scores when you submit your application. No separate documentation is necessary.

Although the Graduate School does not have set test minimums for admission, individual departments use these test scores as part of their holistic review of your application. Please check with the department to which you are applying to see if they have a minimum requirement. The Graduate School does require incoming doctoral students who received a score of 25 or below on the TOEFL Speaking section or a 7.5 or below on IELTS Speaking section to participate in a Summer English Language program at Yale in August prior to matriculation. These students are required to demonstrate English proficiency before they are permitted to teach.

    How to Apply

Identify the program and degree you want.

Decide if you will apply for a Ph.D. or a terminal Master’s (M.S., M.A., M.A.S.) in one of the programs available at the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences. (Note that you will earn one or more Master's degrees en route to a Ph.D.) Learn about the program: its faculty, course offerings, and resources. Read the faculty's research publications. If you can identify and articulate why the program is a good fit for you and show how your preparation and interests align well with it, you will have a strong application.

A note to students applying to one of Yale’s professional schools or programs:

  • If you are applying for a Ph.D. in Architecture, Environment, Investigative Medicine, Law, Management, Music, Nursing, or Public Health, or for an M.S. in Public Health, or an M.A. in Music, be sure to use the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Ph.D./Master's application.
  • If you are applying for any other degree at one of the University’s professional schools (Art, Architecture, Divinity, Drama, Environment, Law, Management, Medicine, Music, Nursing, and Public Health), visit that school’s website for further instructions. Those programs have separate admissions policies and processes that are administered by the professional schools, not GSAS.
  • Verify the application deadline for your program.

Application deadlines vary by program, so please see Dates and Deadlines for information about your program of interest. All new students enroll in the fall, and the admissions process begins nearly a year in advance of matriculation.

Determine what standardized tests you need to take. Register early.

Some Ph.D. and Master’s degree programs require Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores. Check your program's standardized testing requirement before you apply. In addition, applicants whose native language is not English may need to take an English Language test (TOEFL or IELTS).

    Complete your application.
