Degree Requirements
Master of Arts
Of the 30 credits required for the master's degree, students are expected to complete a minimum of 24 credits of graded coursework, including SOC 5030 (Classical Sociological Theory), SOC 5100 (Research Design and Methods), one methods-specific course (qualitative or quantitative), a 9000-level Advanced Topics seminar and one core course selected from among SOC 5056 (Sociology of Culture), SOC 5057 (Sociology of Family), SOC 5059 (Sociology of Science), SOC 5080 (Comparative and Historical Sociology), SOC 5086 (Media Sociology), SOC 5320 (Sociology of Gender), SOC 5420 (Social Stratification), SOC 5900 (Economic Sociology), SOC 7470 (Sociology of Development), SOC 7480 (Sociology of Globalization), SOC 8051 (Sociology of Work), SOC 8052 (Sociology of Religion), SOC 8053 (Sociology of Education), SOC 8054 (Political Sociology), SOC 8055 (Sociology of Law), SOC 8410 (Race and Ethnicity), SOC 8470 (Sociology of Knowledge) and SOC 8710 (Sociology of Organizations). Students are also expected to enroll in the Seminar on Sociological Issues (SOC 8030 and SOC 8040) for a minimum of two semesters.
Students are expected to pass a final examination consisting of a research proposal, research paper, or a critical review essay that is evaluated by a faculty committee.
Doctor of Philosophy
Of the 72 credits required for the doctoral degree, students are expected to complete a minimum of 46 credits of graded coursework, including SOC 5020 (Introduction to Social Statistics), SOC 5030 (Classical Sociological Theory), SOC 5060 (Contemporary Sociological Theory), SOC 5100 (Research Design and Methods), SOC 5140 (Qualitative Research Methods), SOC 7980 (Graduate Research Workshop), a 9000-level Advanced Topics seminar, and three core courses selected from among SOC 5056 (Sociology of Culture), SOC 5057 (Sociology of Family), SOC 5059 (Sociology of Science), SOC 5080 (Comparative and Historical Sociology), SOC 5086 (Media Sociology), SOC 5320 (Sociology of Gender), SOC 5420 (Social Stratification), SOC 5900 (Economic Sociology), SOC 7470 (Sociology of Development), SOC 7480 (Sociology of Globalization), SOC 8051 (Sociology of Work), SOC 8052 (Sociology of Religion), SOC 8053 (Sociology of Education), SOC 8054 (Political Sociology), SOC 8055 (Sociology of Law), SOC 8410 (Race and Ethnicity), SOC 8470 (Sociology of Knowledge) and SOC 8710 (Sociology of Organizations). Students are also expected to complete five credits of the Seminar on Sociological Issues (SOC 8030 and SOC 8040).
Students are expected to pass a qualifying examination, write a special fields paper, and write and present a qualifying research paper.
Students are expected to complete all requirements stated above by the conclusion of their third year.
Students are expected to write and defend a dissertation proposal and a dissertation.
