About Global Health, B.S.

The Global Health major is a bioscience and public health program in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS) at UW-Madison.

Students in the major will study human health and well-being through population-level and planetary health perspectives. The major provides students with a foundation in disease biology and epidemiology, food systems, environmental health, and public health and policy, and also allows students to focus further within their area of interest. The curriculum features introductory coursework in biosciences and social sciences, a set of core courses, a variety of depth courses, and a culminating capstone course. Students are encouraged to complete a global health field experience as part of their major.

Global health is about improving health equitably for all people worldwide. The globalâ€ in global health does not necessarily mean international,â€ but rather refers to the scope of the issues addressed, spanning geographic and socioeconomic boundaries. A key facet of global health is a focus on disease and illness prevention and addressing root causes of health challenges around the world. Examples of global health issues include infectious disease, inadequate water and sanitation systems, climate change, food insecurity, maternal and child health, and racism in the medical system, to name a few.

The Global Health major fits well with a range of career interests and will benefit students interested in healthcare professions as well as those interested in research or policy careers related to the biological or social science facets of public health.

Describe the current status of health, well-being and sustainability for humans and all life, the environment, and the planet.
Compare and contrast health and environmental conditions in the context of local settings and our state with national, international and global settings.
Quantify health challenges in terms of the global burden of disease, the human development index, and the metrics associated with the sustainable development goals and the planetary health boundaries.
Evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of contemporary initiatives and programs to improve global public health and sustainable systems.
Use socioeconomic and political frameworks to characterize health challenges and demonstrate social awareness.
Demonstrate interpersonal and communication skills necessary for teamwork and leadership, ethical conduct, cross-cultural collaboration and civic engagement.
Use a systems approach to analyze complex relationships related to creating conditions for healthy life, sustainability and survival and describe the challenges and opportunities related to sustainable systems and survival.

Entry Requirements

All undergraduate students at UW–Madison must complete the university-wide General Education Requirements, which are designed to convey the essential core of an undergraduate education. This core establishes a foundation for living a productive life, being a citizen of the world, appreciating aesthetic values, and engaging in lifelong learning in a continually changing world. These requirements provide for breadth across the humanities and arts, social studies, and natural sciences; competence in communication, critical thinking, and analytical skills necessary for success in college and beyond; and investigation of the issues raised by living in a culturally diverse society. This core is intended to provide students with intellectual and practical skills, basic knowledge of human cultures and the physical world, strategies for understanding these topics, and tools intended to contribute to their sense of personal and social responsibility. General Education complements the work students do in their majors and degrees. Together, these requirements help students learn what they need to know not just for making a living, but also for making a life.

Completing the General Education Requirements is an important part of achieving these competencies, and to do so, students choose from many courses in communication, ethnic studies, quantitative reasoning, and breadth of study across disciplines in the natural sciences, humanities, literature, and arts, and social and behavioral sciences.

Each school and college may choose to allow General Education courses to count toward other degree and/or major requirements. Students should always check with their advisors to discuss any additional degree requirements and determine if students are required to take specific General Education courses or to complete the requirements in a particular order. Freshman applicants educated in non-English speaking countries must submit an official TOEFL, IELTS, or Duolingo English Test (DET) score, unless English was the primary language of instruction in all four years of secondary school.

All English proficiency exams should be sent electronically, directly from the testing service.

We do not superscore any English Proficiency exam and score reports cannot be older than two years from the time you apply.

If you feel that you qualify for an English Proficiency Exam waiver based upon the requirements above, please submit all required transcripts to our office. Other test scores such as ACT, SAT, or AP (Advanced Placement) scores do not meet the requirements for a waiver. Once your transcripts are received in our office (are no longer displayed on your to-do list in your Student Center), we will determine your waiver eligibility. Waivers will not be processed prior to receipt of both the admissions application and transcripts.

Students are encouraged to regularly meet with their assigned advisor in the major, which helps ensure that they are aware of opportunities and progressing in their academic and career goals.

Advising is typically done through individual in-person appointments, but advisors in the major are also able to meet with students over the phone or through video conferencing if needed. Quick questions can be answered via email, but an appointment should be scheduled if a conversation is needed. The knowledge and skills developed through the Global Health major prepare students for success in a range of career paths. Some graduates may use their global health education to go into a healthcare profession, while others may choose careers as researchers, policy-makers, administrators, non-profit workers, educators, data analysts, and communicators in fields related to public health, epidemiology, environmental health, or international development. The major supports students who intend to go directly into the workforce after graduation, as well as those who intend to further their education through graduate or professional programs.

Because an interest in global health can lead to many different careers, students are encouraged to begin the career exploration process early in their UW-Madison journey by working with advisors, faculty, and career resources on campus. These resources can help students reflect on their values and goals, identify career paths, and outline strategies for pursuing their goals.
