The Surgical Technician Program is an Associate Degree program that can be completed in four semesters in addition to one semester of prerequisites and an externship of a minimum of 120 surgical cases following didactic training. The program prepares and trains individuals for a career in surgical technology. Surgical Technicians assist in operations under the supervision of surgeons, registered nurses and other surgical personnel. Upon the successful completion of coursework, students receive an Associate of Applied Science from Utah State University. At that time students are eligible to submit an application and if accepted, sit for the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) certification examination. Graduates of accredited surgical technician programs are eligible to sit for the NBSTSA certification exam to become certified surgical technologist (CST). The USU Surgical Technology Program is currently under review for accreditation.
Students interested in the Surgical Technology (ST) Program must complete a ST Program Application, be accepted and provide all required documents PRIOR to registering for ST classes. Once the application process is complete, the student will be invited to interview with program faculty. Interviews will help the faculty determine if students will be able to comply with the requirements of the program including travel to clinical rotations, meeting surgical case requirements, turning in assignments, participating in interactions with fellow students and instructors, maintaining a GPA of 3.0 throughout the program, participating in orientation, and receiving instruction through a blended delivery format. Please note that there are no additional charges for distance education delivery and all technological requirements are provided by the University including laptops for student use.
