About Master of Political Science

The Master of Arts in Political Science (M.A.) is designed for students who have completed a 4-year undergraduate degree and wish to continue their education in political science. The M.A. in Political Science will prepare you for a career in many different fields, including government, education, policy advocacy and the non-profit sector.

Masters students complete a minimum of 33 credit hours including a three-credit capstone master's essay. We admit full and part-time students, and most students complete their degree in two to three years. Many students go on to earn a doctorate upon completion of the M.A. There are a limiting number of partial tuition scholarships available to masters students. Students who have been admitted to our masters program may apply for the Graduate Professional Scholarship and for CLAS Scholarships. Wayne State undergraduates who participated in AGRADE may apply for an AGRADE scholarship.

Our M.A. students have the opportunity to specialize in one of six subfields of study: American government and politics, comparative politics, political theory, public policy, urban politics, or world politics. Students in the MA program also gain advanced analytic and methodological skills. Our program offers many advantages, including small class sizes, a diverse student body, a faculty dedicated to excellence in both teaching and research and the connections of our strong alumni network.

Requirements and Admission Criteria for Master of Political Science at Wayne State University

Entry Requirements

International applicants must complete the equivalent of a U.S. four-year bachelor's degree, including all state and external/internal examinations required for the degree. Some three-year general degrees (from Canada, India, Pakistan, France, Lebanon, etc.) may not be equivalent to a four-year U.S. bachelor's degree. However, if you have completed an honors degree, additional undergraduate coursework beyond the three-year bachelor's degree, or a graduate degree, you may be considered for admission.

If you are applying to a master's program, your minimum undergraduate GPA must be 2.75 or its equivalent in upper division coursework. If you are applying to a doctoral program, your minimum undergraduate GPA must be 3.0 or its equivalent in upper division coursework.

Non-native speakers of English must demonstrate English proficiency by meeting the minimum requirements. You are required to submit an official qualifying score meeting minimum Graduate School requirements.
