About Master of Theatre and Dance

The Master of Arts in Theatre and Dance- Teaching Artistry is a three-year, part-time program of advanced studies in theatre and dance, designed to provide education, preparation, and mentorship relevant to professional teaching artists, including the areas of study as indicated below:

Through rigorous coursework, the program seeks to deepen graduate students' relationship with scholarly inquiry, humanizing pedagogy, and personal artistry for preparing graduates of the program for careers in teaching artistry, arts administration, arts advocacy and arts entrepreneurship, all of which enhance their current professional work. Bringing together the most current theories and practices, the program provides learning experiences in a collaborative and cooperative environment that fosters cultural sensitivity, problem-solving skills and ensemble-based thinking and creativity.

The MA in Theatre and Dance - Teaching Artistry, the only program of its kind globally, is offered fully online in order to accommodate graduate students who are working professionals and to provide flexibility for those living outside the Detroit metropolitan area. To these ends, the online format allows current teaching artists and professionals to complete research projects, fieldwork, and internships in their current location. Graduate students may select the Essay or Thesis options for completing their degree. The program accepts a new cohort of graduate students every other year (2022, 2024 and so on).

A minimum of fifteen semester credits in the area of specialization (theatre, dance, a related field, or some combination therein) is required.

When you apply for Graduate Admission through the WSU Graduate School, you will be asked to provide the following supplemental materials.

Personal Statement & Statement of Objectives: Please upload one document that contains a 500 word personal statement followed by a 500 word statement of objectives. In your personal statement, please discuss your academic and professional background and how it has prepared you for admission to the program. In your statement of objectives, please articulate how your current academic and professional goals are related to the program, placing special emphasis on where and in what capacity you will carry out internships and fieldwork projects contained in some coursework.
Two letters of recommendation from individuals familiar with your experience, education, training and skills that prepare you for graduate study.

Requirements and Admission Criteria for Master of Theatre and Dance at Wayne State University

Entry Requirements

International applicants must complete the equivalent of a U.S. four-year bachelor's degree, including all state and external/internal examinations required for the degree. Some three-year general degrees (from Canada, India, Pakistan, France, Lebanon, etc.) may not be equivalent to a four-year U.S. bachelor's degree. However, if you have completed an honors degree, additional undergraduate coursework beyond the three-year bachelor's degree, or a graduate degree, you may be considered for admission.

If you are applying to a master's program, your minimum undergraduate GPA must be 2.75 or its equivalent in upper division coursework. If you are applying to a doctoral program, your minimum undergraduate GPA must be 3.0 or its equivalent in upper division coursework.

Submit your transcript(s)

To begin the application review, upload unofficial copies of English-translated international transcripts from all post-secondary educational institutions from which you earned a bachelor's degree or higher, including Mark Sheets, if applicable. If you are admitted, you must submit an official course-by-course academic evaluation of your completed bachelor's degree.

Demonstrate English proficiency

Non-native speakers of English must demonstrate English proficiency by meeting the minimum requirements. You are required to submit an official qualifying score meeting minimum Graduate School requirements. Send official test scores to Wayne State University Graduate Admissions, using the school code 1898.
