The Department of Chemistry offers a graduate program leading to a PhD in chemistry. The program is distinguished by the low graduate student–to–faculty ratio, which ensures that each student and faculty member come to know each other well. In addition, the breadth of research opportunities and course offerings provides PhD students with exposure to many subfields of chemistry. Each student follows a customized program of study and progress is mentored by a three-member faculty advisory committee.
Students completing the PhD program develop the skills to be independent chemical researchers and are qualified to design, carry out, interpret, and communicate the results of significant research projects. Course requirements, progress examinations, preparation and defense of research proposals, seminar presentations, and teaching assignments are all designed with this goal in mind.
Interested students are encouraged to visit the websites of individual faculty members to explore research areas and opportunities available in the department.
