    About Master of Clinical Rehabilitation and Mental Health Counseling

    The clinical rehabilitation and mental health counseling program offers a curriculum at the master's degree level. All students complete coursework in core counseling knowledge and skill development as well as knowledge associated with disability, mental health, addiction, and rehabilitation issues. The opportunities for working as a professional counselor are numerous and include working in allied health settings, state-federal systems of vocational rehabilitation, Veterans' Affairs, and delivering counseling services in mental health and/or substance use disorder treatment programs.

    The program is available for both full- and part-time students in a hybrid modality that uses asynchronistic online courses coupled with two immersion weeks on campus for counseling skill development. The program is fully accredited by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP) for the specializations of Clinical Rehabilitation Counseling and Clinical Mental Health Counseling until 2023 and is a WVU Program of Excellence. In the last ranking by U.S. News & World Report the program was ranked 37th.

    Entry Requirements

    You must have a bachelor's degree from a properly recognized institution.

    The minimum cumulative grade-point average (GPA) is 2.75 on a 4.0 scale. Some programs have higher minimum GPA requirements. Please consult with a representative from your program for details.

    WVU considers Higher National Diplomas (HNDs) from Nigeria or Ghana to be comparable to US bachelor’s degrees under the following conditions: the HND is a 2-year program that followed a 2-year National Diploma (ND) or Ordinary National Diploma (OND) program, for a total of at least 4 years of post-secondary study. 

    Applicants with 3-year bachelor’s degrees can be reviewed for admission to graduate programs. We recommend asking your program contact if your coursework meets their expectations.

    WVU doesn’t require external credential evaluations. We can convert your GPA based on your academic records.

    WVU will accept the GPA, credential equivalency, and university recognition status from official WES ICAP evaluations if provided. This does not apply to other evaluation agencies.
