About Master of Medical Laboratory Science

The Master of Science (MS) in Medical Laboratory Science (MLS) provides the opportunity for college graduates with bachelor's degrees unrelated to the field to enter the profession, and offers strong preparation for immediate employment or further postgraduate study. As part of the curriculum, students receive extensive practical experience working in laboratories of affiliated clinical sites, including WVU Medicine locations.

The program is based at the WVU Robert C. Byrd Health Sciences Center and consists of lectures, student laboratory instruction, and clinical experience at one of the program's affiliated laboratories.

While granting of the Master of Science (MS) degree is not contingent on passing any external certification or licensure examination, the MLS program also prepares graduates to sit for the national certification examination given by the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) Board of Certification (BOC).

You must have a bachelor's degree from a properly recognized institution.

The minimum cumulative grade-point average (GPA) is 2.75 on a 4.0 scale. Some programs have higher minimum GPA requirements. Please consult with a representative from your program for details.

WVU considers Higher National Diplomas (HNDs) from Nigeria or Ghana to be comparable to US bachelor’s degrees under the following conditions: the HND is a 2-year program that followed a 2-year National Diploma (ND) or Ordinary National Diploma (OND) program, for a total of at least 4 years of post-secondary study.

Applicants with 3-year bachelor’s degrees can be reviewed for admission to graduate programs. We recommend asking your program contact if your coursework meets their expectations.

WVU doesn’t require external credential evaluations. We can convert your GPA based on your academic records.

WVU will accept the GPA, credential equivalency, and university recognition status from official WES ICAP evaluations if provided. This does not apply to other evaluation agencies.
