The scholarship is open to applicants engaged in research on any subject related to how education and educationalists engage with extremism and/or racism and racial conflict, and differential ethnic/racial experiences of education. Relevant topics might include but are not limited to:

Educators 'safeguarding' against extremism
The 'Prevent Duty' and its implementation within different educational sectors
Preventing/countering violent extremism policies and their relationship to education in different national settings
Educators and anti-extremism/anti-racism educational practice
School choice and ethnic community cohesion
Community cohesion and ethnic integration within student bodies
Ethnic minority entry to and experience of initial teacher training
Ethnic minority pupil attainment.

The successful candidate can expect:

  • Full waiver of tuition fees.
  • An annual stipend of £17,668 in addition to a fee-waiver.
  • Full-time PhD study for three years beginning in September 2023.
  • Supervision from internationally renowned SEPD staff.
  • Opportunities to contribute to wider research projects and activities within SEPD, and the expectation to gain teaching experience.
  • Access to the Teaching Assistant Preparation Programme (TAPP), which can lead to the qualification of Associate Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy (AFHEA).
  • Access to additional financial support through the Postgraduate Support Fund of the School of Education and Professional Development.
  • If not successful, consideration for a partial fee-waiver or full-fee study.

The successful candidate is normally required to be a resident in/near Huddersfield during the period of registration.
