The School of Education and Professional Development at the University of Huddersfield is pleased to invite applications for a PhD related to Youth, Education and Marginalisation for new UK home PhD students, starting in September 2023.

The successful candidate can expect:

  • Full waiver of tuition fees.
  • An annual stipend of £17,668 in addition to a fee-waiver.
  • Full-time PhD study for three years beginning in September 2023.
  • Supervision from internationally renowned SEPD staff.
  • Opportunities to contribute to wider research projects and activities within SEPD, and the expectation to gain teaching experience.
  • Access to the Teaching Assistant Preparation Programme (TAPP), which can lead to the qualification of Associate Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy (AFHEA).
  • Access to additional financial support through the Postgraduate Support Fund of the School of Education and Professional Development.
  • If not successful, consideration for a partial fee-waiver or full-fee study.

The successful candidate is normally required to be a resident in/near Huddersfield during the period of registration.

The scholarship is open to applicants engaged in research on any subject related to young people, education, marginalisation and transitions to adulthood and employment. Relevant topics might include but are not limited to:

Graduates, 'employability' and youth transitions
The dynamics of the youth labour market for working-class young people
Understanding youth 'economic inactivity'
Special schools, SEND and youth transitions to adulthood
(Re)-entering the labour market after being NEET experienced
Young people, poverty and social exclusion

How to Apply

The successful candidate's primary affiliation will be with the 'Young People and Marginalisation' research cluster, part of SEPD's Huddersfield Centre for Research in Education and Society (HudCRES). Additional information can be found on our HudCRES page. Applications should be accompanied by a detailed proposal outlining the project and its relevance to the scope of the scholarship.
