Not only the range of courses has grown. The university itself has also expanded continuously. The spacious Hubland campus was built on a hill on the eastern edge of the city. In 2011, the university also began to expand to the 39 hectare new North Campus.

The JMU is one of the leading universities in Germany - this is proven by rankings of national and international research organizations as well as international expert commissions. In many areas of science, for example in biology, medicine, chemistry, physics and psychology, the University of Würzburg is also one of the top international academic institutions.

Research centers as trademarks

As early as the early 1990s, JMU began to establish cross-faculty research centers. This opened up new research topics and innovative courses of study. These interdisciplinary centers - one of them is the Center for Infection Research - have become an internationally visible trademark of the university.

The formation of the research centers has developed enormous momentum and brought the university into the top group of German universities. The successful integration of the centers into the structures of the university has achieved a great deal. Among other things, she ensured that the amount of research funds raised by public donors, private donors and industry and the number of high-ranking scientific publications have grown significantly. The number of professors and assistants at the University of Würzburg remained almost constant.
