About University of Cyprus in Cyprus
Established in 1989, University of Cyprus (UCY) is a public university located in Nicosia, Cyprus. It has a global ranking of 389 for the year 2025 according to QS World University Rankings’ website.With a broad range of degree programs, it offers a unique academic and culturally immersive experience for international students.
The University of Cyprus is a public corporate body. It is governed by the University Council, comprising both government appointed and university elected members and the Senate where members are senior academic staff. The Faculties and Departments are administered by internal Boards; each Faculty is headed by an elected Dean; and each Department is headed by an elected Chairperson. The Rector’s Council has executive competences concerning daily or current matters.
UCY Governing Bodies
The Council is responsible for the management and supervision of the administrative and financial affairs of the University and its property. The Council prepares the annual budget of the University for the financial year commencing on the first of January and ending on the 31st of December in each year and ratifies or promotions of the academic and administrative staff of the University.
The Senate is the highest academic body of the University and is responsible for the academic affairs of the University, both teaching and research.
The Rector’s Council has executive competences concerning daily or current matters, , granted by the Senate upon recommendation of the Rector, or the Council upon recommendation of the Chairman of the Council.
The University of Cyprus was established by law in 1989 as a body
governed by public law;
admitted its first students in 1992;
offers a range of undergraduate, postgraduate and vocational programmes;
has developed a strong research activity (basic and applied) across the whole range of social impact-oriented disciplines;
is staffed (September 2023 data) with 348 academic staff members, 57 Special Teaching Staff members, 791 postdoctoral researchers, research assistants, academic researchers and Special Scientists, and 385 administrative staff members;
is financially supported by state funding (59%) and by its own revenues (41%)
is on a continuous upward trajectory of success, with the world reputation rankings placing it among the top universities
internationally. More specifically: TIMES 2024 (among the top 501-600), QS 2024 (368), Shanghai ranking – ARWU 2023 (701-800), and US Best Global University Rankings 2022-23 (643).
is a partner of the European university YUFE (Young Universities for the Future of Europe), the European alliance of Young Universities for the Future of Europe.
The organisational entities are housed on the University Campus, in the premises of the former Pedagogical Academy and the Shacolas Educational Centre for Clinical Medicine (former Faculty of Nursing), in a part of a building complex in Latsia, in buildings in the walled city of Nicosia, as well as in a significant number of buildings scattered in the wider area of Nicosia.
