    Advanced Materials for Sustainable Infrastructure

    About

    Overview

This new Master's degree aims to train future leaders in the role of materials in resilient and sustainable built infrastructure.

Civil infrastructure is critical to the development of most countries, with the UK Government alone now investing آ£60bn/year in new infrastructure. Huge volumes of materials are used to construct the buildings, bridges, roads, railways, airports, sea defences, power stations and other vital infrastructure that we need.

Aimed at engineers and scientists, this degree will provide a deep understanding of the behaviour and characteristics of civil engineering materials, and the ability to develop sustainable designs for construction.

The programme is delivered in a world-leading Civil and Environmental Engineering department and the training and research you undertake will be at the forefront of developments in this area. You will have access to the new world-class Advanced Infrastructure Materials Laboratory, housed in the Department, to carry out innovative research.

Gain a deep understanding of the behaviour and characteristics of civil engineering materials.

    Requirements

    Entry Requirements

To be considered for admission to a Master's e.g. MSc, MRes, MBA, etc, applicants should hold a Bachelor's degree with an overall GPA of 3.25/4 or better, though 3.5/4 is preferred.

Applicants for research should also be in possession of a Master's degree  with an overall GPA of 3/4 or better.

    Career

This Master's degree will produce the materials experts desperately needed by industry, in the UK and around the world. Potential employers include engineering consultants designing and supervising new infrastructure projects or upgrades to existing infrastructure, contractors constructing or upgrading/repairing infrastructure, materials manufacturers and suppliers, owners of built assets, test houses involved in testing materials and surveying structures, companies involved in designing and installing monitoring systems on infrastructure.

You will also be prepared for a career in research, making you attractive to government research laboratories concerned with the built environment and universities with civil engineering departments.

    How to Apply

    Applying online

To apply for a postgraduate taught course (MSc, MRes, MPH, PG Cert, PG Dip and MBA), you must apply online.

Once you have created an online account, you can search for the course you want to apply for and start your application.

    Course choice

You may only be considered for a maximum of two programmes per admissions cycle.

If you are applying to the Business School, you may only be considered for one programme per admissions cycle.

If you are applying for one of our Finance Master's programmes, you have the option to indicate which other areas of finance you are most interested in. If we do not make you an offer for your selected programme, you will be automatically considered for alternative programmes within the finance suite.

    When to apply

Imperial College Business School operates a number of fixed application deadlines throughout the year for its courses.

Most other postgraduate courses remain open until they are full, though popular courses tend to close early, so make sure you apply in good time. Popular courses may start closing from January onwards proceeding the next intake.

As a guide, visa nationals (overseas applicants) should aim to apply by no later than 30 June. UK and non-visa nationals should apply by 1 August to ensure your application can be processed in time for your chosen year of entry.

If you are planning to apply for College funding, you need to be aware of the various closing dates for College awards. Use our scholarships search tool to search for scholarships you may be eligible for.

    Submitting evidence

To show how you qualify for the course(s) you are applying for, you will need to provide information about the higher qualifications you have achieved or which you’re currently studying.

All Imperial applicants must also show that they have a sufficiently good level of written and spoken English to meet the demands of our challenging academic environment. Find out more about our English language requirements for postgraduate study.

We can process your application more quickly if you upload scanned copies of the academic transcripts and certificates for the higher education qualifications you already hold when you apply.

If you receive an offer we may ask you to provide evidence of your previous qualifications as part of the conditions of your offer. Where this applies, you should following the guidance on submitting documentation to meet your conditions.

    References

You will need to provide the names of two suitable referees. One must be an academic reference, the second referee may be another academic referee, or where appropriate/relevant, a professional referee.

    Personal statement

You will need to complete a personal statement as part of your application. These statements support your application by demonstrating that the course is right for you and that you have the skills, knowledge and aptitude to achieve the course requirements. They are normally around one to two pages of text.

    Application fee

There is an application fee for our taught Master's courses. This helps cover some of the costs associated with processing the large volume of applications we receive.

The application fees for 2022/23 academic year of entry are:

    • £80 for all taught Master's applications
    • £135 for MBA applications

The application fees for 2023/24 academic year of entry are:

    • £80 for all taught Master's applications excluding those to the Imperial College Business School
    • £100 for all MSc applications to the Imperial College Business School
    • £150 for MBA applications to the Imperial College Business School

The application fee applies once per application and not per course (where you are permitted a second choice).

There is no application fee for MRes courses, Postgraduate Certificates, Postgraduate Diplomas or PhDs.

We don’t want the application fee to be a barrier to qualified students who can’t afford it. So, we have put an application fee waiver in place.

Find out more about the application fee and waiver

    Deposit

If your application is successful and we make you an offer, you may need to pay a deposit.

This deposit may be part of your offer conditions. This amount will be deducted from your tuition fees.
