    About

    Overview

The MSc course provides students with the knowledge and understanding of the state-of-the-art in one or more of the many areas of mechanical engineering within our department.

Our Department of Mechanical Engineering is one of the largest mechanical engineering departments in the world, with topics ranging from the traditional, such as aerotechnologies and engine performance, to more recent engineering topics, such as medical engineering, robotics, clean energy and fire science. The course allows for students to develop abilities which are transferable to all areas of mechanical engineering.

For a more comprehensive overview of the areas of research within the department please visit the Department's website.

The principal component of the course is the individual project, which is usually associated with current research activity or industrial consultancy, allowing you to gain substantial expertise in a particular area.

Further expertise is developed by taking taught course modules. Students choose 6-10 modules according to their envisaged career path and from a broad range of taught subjects available in the department.

    Careers

The success of the course can be measured by the large proportion of graduates who go on to find appropriate and challenging posts in industry, government, and universities at home and abroad.

The top two performing students will be awarded a PhD Scholarship that covers full tuition fees as well as a maintenance allowance at the standard yearly rate.

Find out more about Graduate Destinations on the Department's website.

    How to Apply

    Applying online

To apply for a postgraduate taught course (MSc, MRes, MPH, PG Cert, PG Dip and MBA), you must apply online.

Once you have created an online account, you can search for the course you want to apply for and start your application.

    Course choice

You may only be considered for a maximum of two programmes per admissions cycle.

If you are applying to the Business School, you may only be considered for one programme per admissions cycle.

If you are applying for one of our Finance Master's programmes, you have the option to indicate which other areas of finance you are most interested in. If we do not make you an offer for your selected programme, you will be automatically considered for alternative programmes within the finance suite.

    When to apply

Imperial College Business School operates a number of fixed application deadlines throughout the year for its courses.

Most other postgraduate courses remain open until they are full, though popular courses tend to close early, so make sure you apply in good time. Popular courses may start closing from January onwards proceeding the next intake.

As a guide, visa nationals (overseas applicants) should aim to apply by no later than 30 June. UK and non-visa nationals should apply by 1 August to ensure your application can be processed in time for your chosen year of entry.

If you are planning to apply for College funding, you need to be aware of the various closing dates for College awards. Use our scholarships search tool to search for scholarships you may be eligible for.

    Submitting evidence

To show how you qualify for the course(s) you are applying for, you will need to provide information about the higher qualifications you have achieved or which you’re currently studying.

All Imperial applicants must also show that they have a sufficiently good level of written and spoken English to meet the demands of our challenging academic environment. Find out more about our English language requirements for postgraduate study.

We can process your application more quickly if you upload scanned copies of the academic transcripts and certificates for the higher education qualifications you already hold when you apply.

If you receive an offer we may ask you to provide evidence of your previous qualifications as part of the conditions of your offer. Where this applies, you should following the guidance on submitting documentation to meet your conditions.

    References

You will need to provide the names of two suitable referees. One must be an academic reference, the second referee may be another academic referee, or where appropriate/relevant, a professional referee.

    Personal statement

You will need to complete a personal statement as part of your application. These statements support your application by demonstrating that the course is right for you and that you have the skills, knowledge and aptitude to achieve the course requirements. They are normally around one to two pages of text.

    Application fee

There is an application fee for our taught Master's courses. This helps cover some of the costs associated with processing the large volume of applications we receive.

The application fees for 2022/23 academic year of entry are:

    • £80 for all taught Master's applications
    • £135 for MBA applications

The application fees for 2023/24 academic year of entry are:

    • £80 for all taught Master's applications excluding those to the Imperial College Business School
    • £100 for all MSc applications to the Imperial College Business School
    • £150 for MBA applications to the Imperial College Business School

The application fee applies once per application and not per course (where you are permitted a second choice).

There is no application fee for MRes courses, Postgraduate Certificates, Postgraduate Diplomas or PhDs.

We don’t want the application fee to be a barrier to qualified students who can’t afford it. So, we have put an application fee waiver in place.

Find out more about the application fee and waiver

    Deposit

If your application is successful and we make you an offer, you may need to pay a deposit.

This deposit may be part of your offer conditions. This amount will be deducted from your tuition fees.
