    About

With an applied mathematics background, you will be prepared for careers in insurance, electronics and computer manufacturing, logistics, pharmaceuticals, and more.

Applied mathematics is created in response to problems in science, engineering, and society. As an applied mathematician, you will be able to solve problems across career fields, using a variety of mathematical strategies. For example, constructing methods for multicriteria decision making requires discrete mathematics and statistics. Predicting how the financial markets will behave requires probability/statistics, analysis, and optimization. Analyzing how liquid flows around solids requires expertise in computational methods and analysis. With an applied mathematics background, you will be prepared for careers in insurance, electronics and computer manufacturing, logistics, pharmaceuticals, and more.

Illinois Tech's active learning approach is adept at preparing applied mathematics majors to use their skills to the fullest potential. The active learning approach requires teams of students from across disciplines to work together and solve problems, exposing students to a vast field of study.

    Requirements

    Entry Requirements

The program is designed for students who are determined to get an advanced degree in applied mathematics or mathematics. As a result, the math course loads are heavy in most semesters. Students satisfying the following requirements are eligible to apply to the B.S./M.S. combined program:

    1. Have completed four semesters of full-time study in the B.S. program, or have at least 80 credit hours (including transferred credits)
    2. Have an overall GPA of 3.25 or better
    3. Have a GPA of 3.5 or better for math courses

Applications must be accompanied by an official transcript and three letters of recommendation. At least two letters of recommendation are from departmental faculty members.

GRE scores are not required for this Accelerated Master's Program.

Maintaining a GPA of 3.0 or better is required to continue the program.

    English Program Requirements

International students who fit into any of the following categories will be considered to have met the requirement:

    • Residents of a country where English is the only official language and who is a native English speaker
    • Graduates of U.S. high schools
    • Completed the equivalent of Iowa State’s English 150 or 250 with a grade of B or better at an accredited U.S. 2 year or 4 year college or university.

    CONDITIONAL ADMISSION

If you meet all admission requirements but do not meet our English proficiency requirements, Iowa State offers conditional admission to attend our Intensive English and Orientation Program (IEOP). If you would like to enroll in IEOP, on the application choose "I would like to enroll in Iowa State’s IEOP program before I begin the academic study.”

    Career

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, “Overall employment of mathematicians and statisticians is projected to grow 33 percent from 2016 to 2026, much faster than the average for all occupations.” With a masters degree in applied mathematics, you will leave the program as a problem solver and quantitative professional ready to meet the demands of the workplace head-on.
