    About Illinois Institute of Technology

Established in 1893, Illinois Institute of Technology is a private university located in Chicago, United States of America. It has a global ranking of 472 for the year 2024 according to QS World University Rankings’ website. With a broad range of degree programs, it offers a unique academic and culturally immersive experience for international students.

Founded in 1890, IIT is a Ph.D.-granting technological university awarding degrees in the sciences, mathematics, and engineering, as well as architecture, psychology, design, business, and law.

IIT's interprofessional, technology-focused curriculum prepares the university's 6,200 students for leadership roles in an increasingly complex and culturally diverse global workplace.IIT was formed in 1940 by the merger of the Armour Institute of Technology, founded in 1890, and the Lewis Institute, founded in 1895.

Both schools had nationally recognized engineering programs. The Institute of Design, founded in 1937, merged with IIT in 1949. In 1969 the Kent College of Law was merged into IIT and the Stuart School of Business was created with a gift from Harold Leonard Stuart, an alumnus of the Lewis Institute.

In 1986, the Midwest College of Engineering at Lombard Illinois, founded in 1967, was absorbed by IIT. This was the start of IIT's strong presence in Chicago's west suburban high-tech "Silicon Prairie."

In 1995, beset by declining enrollment in its liberal arts programs, the university reorganized its academic units, eliminating the liberal arts college entirely and concentrating on architecture, science and engineering, psychology, law, and business.

The Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) was first published in June 2003 by the Center for World-Class Universities (CWCU), Graduate School of Education (formerly the Institute of Higher Education) of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, China, and updated on an annual basis. Since 2009 the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) has been published and copyrighted by ShanghaiRanking Consultancy. ShanghaiRanking Consultancy is a fully independent organization on higher education intelligence and not legally subordinated to any universities or government agencies. ARWU uses six objective indicators to rank world universities, including the number of alumni and staff winning Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals, a number of highly cited researchers selected by Clarivate, a number of articles published in journals of Nature and Science, a number of articles indexed in Science Citation Index Expanded™ and Social Sciences Citation Index™ in the Web of Science™, and per capita performance of a university. More than 2500 universities are actually ranked by ARWU every year and the best 1000 are published.
