    About

    This course will offer you a thorough and scientific understanding of sport, exercise and nutrition.

    Interested in how nutritional advice can be used to optimise sport performance? Aspire to help individuals who exercise for recreational purposes to lose weight? Or make your mark by tackling health challenges such as obesity, heart disease and diabetes by supporting individuals with optimal dietary habits?

    Our Sport, Exercise and Nutrition BSc (Hons) course will provide a practical, 'real-world', multi and inter-disciplinary emphasis on the latest developments in sport, exercise and health nutrition. You will learn about the inter-play between psychology, physiology and nutrition to support individuals to perform at their best whether their goal is to excel in sport, or their aim is to exercise for health benefits.

    At Northumbria we also provide you with the opportunity to study out of discipline modules with an emphasis on sport management and sport coaching, so if you have an entrepreneurial streak or are interested in teaching following graduation, this is the course for you. With access to a sports laboratory and testing equipment in our specialist sport and teaching facility and a bespoke nutrition kitchen, this is a course that combines practical hands-on training with the latest contemporary research in the field of sport and exercise nutrition to set you up for a career in this area.

    The scientific content of the curriculum is aligned with the scientific knowledge requirements and competencies detailed in the Sport and Exercise Nutrition Register (SENr) and during your studies you’ll be encouraged to critically evaluate existing theory and practice as well as carry out your own independent research.

    During your second year you will have the option to undertake a work placement in a related area, study abroad or take our Year in International Business course, so that you can put your knowledge and skills into practice and gain a wider international experience.

    This course is geared towards developing graduates who have the knowledge and skills to secure a successful career in the fields of sport, exercise or nutrition, including public health and well-being, sports development and management, coaching, fitness instruction and more.

    A distinctive feature of the course is its alignment with the scientific knowledge requirements and competencies detailed in the Sport and Exercise Nutrition Register (SENr). The course has been mapped to the SENr knowledge competencies at an introductory level. Therefore, whilst the undergraduate degree would need to be supplemented by an appropriate postgraduate qualification for you to be accepted onto the Graduate Register, SENr approval denotes that this programme appropriately prepares students for further post graduate study in the field of sport and exercise nutrition. Such recognition is becoming increasingly important for securing jobs in the field.

    You’ll be equipped with the knowledge, practical skills and confidence to work in a variety of roles associated with sport and exercise nutrition and will have the opportunity to do a variety of add on courses. This might include 'working with people who have disabilities', 'working with children', 'first aid', 'ISAK Level 1/2 Body Composition Analysis' etc.*, to enhance your employability prospects and graduate readiness.

    You’ll leave with a fantastic mix of skills, combining in-depth subject knowledge, excellent practical and interpersonal skills plus hands-on work experience, which will open doors to some really exciting career opportunities.

    Graduates from this course can go on to work in a range of fields, including sport and exercise nutrition, sport and exercise physiology, the food industry, health promotion, exercise on referral, dietetics, research and more.
