    Entry Requirements

    We will consider students who have taken GCE A Level examinations or the International Baccalaureate (IB) for entrance to onto our undergraduate programmes. Holders of the Thanawiyah are not normally eligible for direct entry onto our undergraduate courses without the completion of a suitable foundation programme, such as one of our foundation pathways.

    English Language

    You will need to demonstrate a certain level of English language, either through an English test such as IELTS, TOEFL or PTE, or we may be able to accept your previous or alternative qualifications as evidence.     A Level Biology at grade B or above; A GDC recognised Dental Nursing qualification may be submitted in lieu of one A Level subject. Minimum of six GCSEs at grade C/4 to include English, Mathematics and a Biological subject/dual award science.

    Access to Higher Education (Health or Science):

    60 credits with a minimum of 45 credits at Level 3, including 30 at distinction and 15 at merit, to include Biology total 15 credits. You must meet the GCSE entry requirements in full for the programme

    Minimum Age Requirement

    As this programme has a mandatory clinical placement, every applicant for admission to the University must have reached the age of 18 years on 1 October of the year of entry.

    Alternative Specific Entry Requirements

    Access to Higher Education (Health or Science) + Dental Nursing:

    60 credits with a minimum of 45 credits at Level 3, including 30 at merit or above to include Biology total 15 credits. You must meet the GCSE entry requirements in full for the programme

    BTEC Diploma:

    • BTEC Extended Diploma in Health and Social Care or Applied Science accepted. Grades required – DDM. You must meet the GCSE entry requirements in full for the programme
    • BTEC Diploma considered on a case by case basis when combined with an A level (Typical offer DD plus B in Biology). You must meet the GCSE entry requirements in full for the programme
    • BTEC Subsidiary Diploma considered on a case by case basis when combined with two A levels including Biology. You must meet the GCSE entry requirements in full for the programme
    • Scottish Criteria: BBBBBs at HL and AB at advanced level to include Biology
    • Irish Leaving Certificate: H1 H1 H2 H2 in Highers to include English, Maths and Biology

    Additional Information

    • For admission on to the course, selected prospective students will undergo an interview process. Interviewees would be expected to be familiar with the role of the Dental Hygienist and Dental Therapist within the dental team in the United Kingdom
    • Alongside the interview, satisfactory references, a health screening and criminal records searches are also part of the selection process. If the application is successful you will be asked to provide satisfactory evidence of non-infectivity and immunisation against Hepatitis B.

    • Birmingham School of Dental Hygiene & Therapy currently has no facility to offer places to overseas students or students with overseas qualifications seeking shortened courses
    • All successful applicants will be required to produce satisfactory evidence of immunisation against Hepatitis B and evidence of non-infectivity for HIV, Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C virus prior to undertaking patient care as a registered dental hygiene and therapy student. The UK Government Department of Health now requires all potential undergraduate medical, dental and dental hygiene and therapy students to undergo additional health clearance and this will be a condition of being on the course. Details will be forwarded to you after your place on the course has been confirmed.
    • Students will also be required to complete a successful Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check before admission to the course.
    • Candidates are expected to show a range of skills including dexterity, communication and teamwork. Some work experience in dentistry, particularly shadowing a dental hygienist or dental therapist, is required before completing the UCAS form.
    • All students will be required to sign the subject-specific Fitness to Practise Code of Conduct on entry, details of which will be forwarded with an offer letter.

    Selection of Students

    Candidates should demonstrate work observation/experience in Dental Hygiene and Therapy within the UK and evidence of good dexterity (for example, through playing a musical instrument, model-making, DIY work or art). All applicants who have been offered a place at Birmingham will be offered the opportunity to attend the department for a day of familiarisation with the course.

    Alternative offers through our Pathways to Birmingham programmes and our Contextual Offer scheme

    Students who are eligible and successfully complete a Pathways to Birmingham programme will receive special consideration from admissions tutors and an alternative offer (typically two grades below the standard offer). In addition, our Contextual Offer Scheme recognises the potential of students whose personal circumstances may have restricted achievement in school or college. If you are eligible to benefit from the contextual offer scheme, you will receive an offer which is one grade lower than the standard offer.

    International Students

    Please note: This course is open to Home students only.

    Applicants whose first language is not English must demonstrate competence in English by passing IELTS with a score of 7.0 or higher.

    International Baccalaureate Diploma: 5,5,5 at Higher Level (to include biology and preferably chemistry) with a minimum of 32 points overall.

    Career

    On qualification you will be eligible to apply for entry to the General Dental Council's register for Dental Care Professionals.

    Our Dental and Hygiene Therapy graduates work in general dental practice, salaried dental practice and in hospitals, where they work closely with other members of the Dental team. There are good opportunities for full-time, part-time and flexible working hours. A post-qualification vocational training scheme is also available in the West Midlands for selected applicants.
