    About

The PSM in Bioinformatics is a program within the Graduate School of Biomedical Science and Engineering (GSBSE), a unique statewide education and research consortium dedicated to the training and professional development of graduate students in biomedical science and engineering. The program provides an innovative multidisciplinary and personalized learning environment that prepares its students for successful careers in diverse professional fields that are critical for Maine and the nation's future.

    Program Details

Bioinformatics is the application of mathematical, statistical, and computational approaches to understand biological processes. The PSM provides students an opportunity for hands-on advanced training directly relevant to current knowledge for their professional careers with the flexibility of an online program. Interdisciplinary classes across the fields of mathematics, computer science, spatial information science and engineering, and molecular and cell biology are taught by GSBSE faculty from the University of Maine, the Jackson Laboratory, Mt. Desert Island Biological Laboratory, University of New England, and Maine Medical Center Research Institute.

    Academic Background

Students entering the program are expected to have an undergraduate degree in the sciences, engineering, computer science, or related discipline with a strong academic record. This program is designed for those with a cell and molecular biology background that need more intensive training in math, computer, and information science, or from the mathematics, computer, or information sciences disciplines and need training in cell and molecular biology.

    Program Requirements

The 30-credit online program allows students to have multidisciplinary training on technical facets of bioinformatics investigations with a focus on real-world implementation through the following curricular framework:

    • 15 credits of bioinformatics courses
    • 9 credits of enrichment courses
    • 6 credits of applied field experience

Graduates from the PSM in Bioinformatics are able to advance in or enter the biomedical research industry and/or continue onto terminal and other academic programs.
