If you are a Home student joining the PGCE programme you may be eligible for a Government training bursary or scholarship.

The bursary/scholarship amount is based on the highest previous qualification that you have attained to date. Only UK and EU students will be eligible for the training bursary.

Students with an overseas degree will be eligible for a bursary if their degree is equivalent to a UK honours degree.

These payments are not taxable, but might be included as part of your capital income if you receive state benefits. Contact your local benefits office to find out how this might affect your situation.

For 2022/23, the subjects eligible for bursary are:

Biology: £10,000
Chemistry: £24,000
Computing: £24,000
Design and technology: £15,000
Geography: £15,000
Languages(including ancient languages): £15,000
Maths: £24,000
Physics: £24,000

If you are already registered on a PGCE course at St Mary's for one of the subjects listed above you will be emailled with a link to provide your bank details in order to receive the training bursary.

Scholarships

There are also scholarships of £26,000 available for chemistry, computing, mathematics and physics students. Scholarships are usually available to applicants with a 1st, 2:1, Master's or PhD.

Please note: You cannot receive both a teaching bursary and a scholarship.
