Deakin's Bachelor of Nursing/Bachelor of Public Health and Health Promotion enables you to make a real difference in the health outcomes of individuals, communities and global populations.

    On top of the expertise required to qualify as a registered nurse, you will gain specialised knowledge to tackle health issues and boost wellbeing. The course balances contemporary theory with extensive placement experience, and explores combined approaches involving community engagement, policy development, and research. Nursing clinical placements begin in Trimester 1 of your first year and continue throughout your degree. With over 920 hours of work placements in both nursing and public health and health promotion settings, you will graduate career-ready and confident.

Public health is the organised response by society to protect and promote health and prevent disability. By looking at patterns of health and disease across populations, public health experts can use data and evidence-based measures to address the worlds biggest health challenges. Health promotion is about working with communities to improve health and champion factors that support good health – be they environmental, legal, physical, economic or social.

    You will study the foundations of modern health promotion practice, covering key study areas such as:

    • biostatistics
    • environmental health
    • epidemiology
    • health sociology
    • planning and evaluation.

    Deakins purpose-built Clinical Simulation Centres for nursing students simulate real healthcare settings. They provide you with the facilities and equipment required to develop practical nursing skills, which are further enhanced through your clinical placements.

    In your final year, you will also have the opportunity to complete the Public Health and Health Promotion Practicum unit, giving you 120 hours of invaluable practical experience in the health industry.

    Requirements

    Entry Requirements

    Complete foundation studies and/or a diploma program at Deakin College or at one of Deakin's TAFE partners.

    English Program Requirements

    All students must be able to prove that they can meet our English language requirements. Our English language requirements are divided into five bands – from Band A through to Band E. These Bands indicate the level of English required to undertake the course, with Band E representing the highest English skill level required.

    You will be able to provide evidence of your English language skills if you have:

    • completed an English language test such as IELTS, Pearson, TOEFL or Cambridge
      • Applicants who are unable to sit standard tests due to public health concerns relating to the COVID-19 pandemic can complete an online English language test such as IELTS Indicator, OET@Home, TOEFL Special Home Edition.
    • completed some types of university (tertiary) or high-school (secondary) studies
    • completed an approved English subject in IB Diploma, Australian Year 12 or other high school qualifications
    • lived and worked in an English speaking country for at least five years.
