    The Master of Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) responds to a growing local and international demand for higher levels of knowledge and skill in the provision of TESOL education programs. The course will appeal to prospective students who are seeking to advance their employment in youth and adult learning contexts within Australia and abroad.     Postgraduate course academic requirements

    Graduate Certificate and Graduate Diplomas

    You must have either one of the following:

    • an approved three-year undergraduate degree or equivalent from an approved university or other educational institution
    • equivalent qualifications through examination or relevant professional or industrial experience.

    Masters degree by coursework

    You will have completed at least a three-year undergraduate degree, or equivalent, of an acceptable standard from an approved university or other educational institution.

    Masters degree by research

    You have a bachelor degree with honours (second class or above) from a recognised tertiary institution in an appropriate discipline for which Deakin can provide the required supervisory expertise.

    English Program Requirements

    All students must be able to prove that they can meet our English language requirements. Our English language requirements are divided into five bands – from Band A through to Band E. These Bands indicate the level of English required to undertake the course, with Band E representing the highest English skill level required.

    You will be able to provide evidence of your English language skills if you have:

    • completed an English language test such as IELTS, Pearson, TOEFL or Cambridge
      • Applicants who are unable to sit standard tests due to public health concerns relating to the COVID-19 pandemic can complete an online English language test such as IELTS Indicator, OET@Home, TOEFL Special Home Edition.
    • completed some types of university (tertiary) or high-school (secondary) studies
    • completed an approved English subject in IB Diploma, Australian Year 12 or other high school qualifications
    • lived and worked in an English speaking country for at least five years.

    Career

    With a deeper understanding of the linguistic, cultural and pedagogical aspects of language learning, youll graduate as a self-motivated, well-equipped and culturally aware language teacher.

    As a graduate of this course you will be equipped to pursue roles such as EAL teacher, head of EAL learning, or EAL curriculum designer and adviser, across a range of public and private learning institutions.

    Note: this degree does not qualify students to work within school settings as a registered teacher in Australia. Students who wish to gain teacher accreditation should consider the Master of Teacher (Primary or Secondary) and the Master of Applied Learning and Teaching (Secondary).
