    Overview

    Darwin city is a local government area of the Territory in the North side, including the capital’s central district of business, Darwin City, representing 80 % of its metropolitan residents.

    The population of Darwin is equal to 148,000 as of 2021, distributed on an area of 3,164 km2. The city of Darwin hosts most of residents of the Northern Territory who are sparsely populated having different ancestries: Australian, English, Irish and Scottish. It is the smallest, wettest, and is one of the Australian capitals mostly located in the north side serving as the Top regional centre in the end.

    After sixty-nine years, Darwin’s harbor was discovered after the first European settlement had been founded in Australia. Approaching the land, the captain and his lieutenant gave the name “Darwin” to the port in honour of their previous shipmate Charles Darwin 

    Palmers ton was the original name of Darwin which was established in 1869, though the port was always famous for the name Port Darwin. When the gold was explored at Pine Creek in 1871 , the town’s development had been running fast, then the still developing new settlement was regained the name Darwin in 1911.

    Culture

    The Culture in Darwin

    Darwin is actually located near Asia than it is near to cities of Australia like Sydney and Melbourne, so its culture is a kind of a mixture of everything, and its being as a port city supports that furthermore. Aborigines residing in Darwin have had a great effect on its culture as they are in large numbers.

    Depending on people’s opinions from more than 60 nationalities and 70 multiple ethnic backgrounds that refer to Darwin as home. The many cultures have dramatically added to the community.

    The average temperatures in Darwin vary between 25 – 32 2 C which is equal to (77 – 900 C). The richest humidity is witnessed in January and February though these months are the nicest months in the Top End around the year.

    The two distinguished climate regions in Darwin are the tropical savannah of the Top End and the arid, dry savannah of middle Australia; both of them constitute a range of tough weather conditions concerning vegetation and land.

    It can be said that Darwin is almost stretching to 1600 km from north to south and 970 km from east to west to having more than one-sixth of the Australian landmass. The tropical climate is presented in the north in a great deal, and the semiarid climate is noticed in the end southward.

    Darwin is famous for its avid wildlife settled inside and outside the city. National parks are abundant in the city such as Litchfield which is very close and can be reached easily, where you will find the Australian wildlife up very close which can be reached in a short drive and watched clearly.

    Work in Darwin 

    The regulations in Darwin give international students a permission to work for 20 hours a week during full time study in the first term, to work up to 40 hours a week while completing Industry Placement in the second term, and for unlimited hours at times of term breaks. 

    International students are paid well in general, as students are paid at or more than the industry award rate: Students are supposed to be paid between AUS20 and 25 an hour while part time work in the hospitality industry.

    There is a high employment rate in Darwin, so students are expected to receive a job within the first period of studying, as demand for hospitality workers is on increase. For there is a well founded Darwin organization, there are many employer contacts, and the staff are always ready to aid students in preparing for meetings with them. 

    The week of orientation designed for students in order to have meetings with ICAE’s staff (International Council for Adult Education) to advise them exploring their jobs needs and to be sure that they are able to apply and penetrate the workforce market in Darwin.

    ICAE: The International Council for Adult Education which is a global network with specific responsibilities for youth and adult learning and education (ALE) as a universal human right 

    Students’ rights of working are protected by Australian law in Darwin at being paid at the same rate of pay as Australian workers having the same kind of job and responsibilities. Also, students have the right to receive sick leaves, annual leaves and superannuation whilst under employment provisions in Australia (statutory entitlements).

    The Charles Darwin University is the most famous university in Darwin, in addition to having other universities and colleges. The second known institute is the Bachelor Institute of Indigenous Tertiary Education - higher education institution in Australia. In addition, Bachelor Institute of Indigenous Tertiary Education began its history in 1960. The main building of Bachelor Institute of Indigenous Tertiary Education is located in Darwin.
