Ottawa is the capital of Canada located in the south of Ontario in the east, close to the city of Montreal and the U.S. border stretching on the Ottawa River.
The area of the capital city is estimated to be 2,790 km2, on which a population of 996,921 people lives. The population is of several ethnic groups which are Canadian, English, Irish, French, Scottish, German, Italian, Chinese, Asian, Arabs and some insignificant minorities.
The name Ottawa is derived from the Algonquin word “adawe” meaning “to trade”. The settlement had been known before as “Bytown” when it was converted to Ottawa in 1855.
There were some cities which they had been racing to win the capital status of Canada; so, to finish that fierce competition, Queen Victoria selected Ottawa as it was located in the centre between Montreal and Toronto cities, besides being along the border of Ontario and Quebec (the heart of Canada at the time)
Ottawa is known to be one of the safest cities in all Canada, and Canada is considered one of the safest countries in the world, ranked number five in the list top five cities.
