    Accounting and Management

    About

    Our BA (Hons) Accounting and Management degree is a two-year programme with direct entry to Year 3 for those with a completed HND in Accounting.

    You will develop your knowledge in a wide range of areas including accounting, financial reporting, decision making, control, assurance and business finance. You will also study relevant areas of management theory and practice, including strategy and innovation thereby covering a wide range of topics essential for a future career in business. This course has strong links with industry, employers and professional bodies, providing you with a unique combination of academic and professional understanding.

    In the final year of the course, there are two possible routes offering you the flexibility to tailor your study to your own interests and career aspirations.

    Year 1

    You will further develop your knowledge and understanding by undertaking modules relating to accounting, auditing, financeand management areas. You will also have the opportunity to build your business creativity through exploring how to generate and develop viable commercial ideas in the Business Ideas and Opportunities module. You will work in teams, develop your creativity skills and showcase your ideas at a Trade Fair held on campus.

    Year 2

    There is a choice of routes allowing you to tailor your study to your own interests and career aspirations. Both routes study compulsory modules in Financial and Management Accounting, Corporate Ethics, Business Strategy and Business and Innovation. Route B also providesthe opportunity to undertake a significant piece of independent research in the form of a thesis. The grade that you achieve in each module this year determines your honours classification.

    Learning Methods

    Each termhas a block of 12 weeks of teaching and you will study 3 or 4 modules per term. Each module normally has approximately 3 hours of class teaching per week. While there are variations between modules, most consist of a lecture delivered to the entire class supported by tutorials delivered to smaller groups. Your course resources will be available on CampusMoodle, our Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) and will enhance your learning experience and keep you up-to-date with coursework and assignments.

    The duration of the Accounting and Management degree is 2 years.

    Activity Summary

    Year 2

    • Lectures - 90 - 280 students per group, Route A8 - 10 hours per week, Route B 8 - 10 hours per week in term1,4 - 5 hours per week in term2
    • Tutorials - 25 - 40students per group, Route A 4 hours per week, Route B 3 hours per week

    Independent Study

    In addition to lectures and tutorials you will spend approximately 25 hours per week outside of class working on your own. For example undertaking prescribed reading, preparing answers to tutorial assignments or researching and writing course assignments.

    Academic staff who teach on this course have worked in a range of professional backgrounds, are ‘business-connected’ and use professional networks and their academic research to ensure teaching is professionally relevant and cutting edge. Accounting modules are delivered by professionally qualified accounting academics. This course has strong links with industry, employers and professional bodies, providing you with a unique combination of academic and professional understanding.

    Many of our staff have either achieved Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy, or are working towards this. This is a professional recognition of lecturer practice, impact and leadership in teaching and learning.

    Assessment

    Typically students are assessed eachyear:

    Year 1

    • 5written exams, typically for 2-3 hours
    • 1written assignment, including essay
    • 2 class tests
    • 1individual presentation
    • 1group presentation and report

    Year 2

    Route A

    • 4 written exams, typically for 2-3 hours
    • 6 written assignments, including essays

    Route B

    • 3 written exams, typically for 2-3 hours
    • 4 written assignments, including essays
    • 1 thesis

    Feedback

    We aim to provide you with feedback within 20 working days of hand-in for all written exams, coursework and practical exams.

    English Program Requirements

    Most undergraduate courses require an IELTS score of 6.0, with a minimum of 5.5 in each area. Some courses require a higher English language score. Always check the relevant course page and our English Language Requirements page before applying.
