Course structure
Teaching on this degree is structured into lectures, where all students are taught together, and smaller groups of seminars and tutorials. The lectures will provide you with a general framework in Accounting and Finance, whilst the seminar activities and discussions, help your understanding and application of the subject. In tutorial sessions you will not only develop your understanding of Accounting and Finance further, but at times, work together in student-led activities. Seminars and tutorials are also designed to enhance your leadership and employability skills.
If you are studying Accounting and Finance as a Single Honours degree, in your first year of study there are approximately12 teaching hours per week, which decreases to approximately 10 teaching hours in your second and third years. If you are studying Accounting and Finance as a Combined Honours degree, in your first year of study there are approximately6 teaching hours per week, which will decrease to approximately5 teaching hours in your secondand third years.
On top of teaching hours, you are also expected to spend between 20 - 25 hours each week studying independently.This will consist of a range of activitiesincluding additional research and reading, attendance at guest lectures and industry related events, preparation or completion of set tasks for taught sessions, revision for exams, work for your assessments and participation in group work.

Assessment and feedback
There are a number of written assessments to complete throughout the year. These may include individual reports/analyses, group presentations supported by a report, in-class tests, and essays. There will also be final exams at the end of each year.
You will be given written feedback on your assessments, and you will have the opportunity to discuss this with your tutor in more detail.

Curriculum overview
This Single Honours degree requires you to study nine compulsory themes that lead to exemptions from some of the ACCA professional exams. There are an additional five topics that you then study in practice, once you have graduated, in ordercomplete your professional studies.

Year One
Principles of Financial Accounting
You will be introduced to the basic framework of accounting that will enable you to understand how to account for transactions and to prepare financial statements. You will develop a knowledge of the conceptual and regulatory framework that underpins financial statements. Understanding the accounting equation will be supported by practical application of accounting measurement and recognition principles.
Principles of Economics
You will gain an understanding of how markets work through the interaction of supply and demand and their extensions and applications, analyse the decisions of households and firms within a market setting, and how to cope with market failures and the role of the state. You will be introduced to monitoring macroeconomic performance and trends whilst presenting the various schools of thought on macroeconomic fluctuations and policy. International economics will also be considered, enabling you to understand trade flows and exchange rate determination.
Quantitative Methods
You will be able to present and summarise data in various forms and evaluate data collection and sampling techniques. You will develop an understanding of probability theory, hypothesis testing, and correlation and regression analysis. In addition to the use of statistical software, you will experience the preparation of a business report using quantitative techniques.
Introduction to Business*
You will be introduced to the underlying principles of Business Management. You will study four component parts (4Cs) to understanding what a business is (the Company), how it interacts with its environment (the Context), how it serves its customers (the Customers) and how it manages its competition (the Competition). Additionally, you will gain an appreciation of fundamental business structures and functions and the management challenges posed by the contemporary and ever complex business environment.
You will be introduced to the underlying principles of Marketing so that you can understand the wider context of business and business functions and how this helps create a more strategic accounting and finance practitioner. Introduction to Business Management Theory & Practice

Year Two
Management Accounting
This subject develops your critical understanding of the principles of costing and budgeting, as well as the ability to critically apply such principles in the derivation and analysis of costs and budgets in order to support management in planning and decision-making in a variety of business contexts.
Intermediate Financial Accounting
Intermediate Financial Accounting gives you skills in understanding and applying international financial reporting standards and the theoretical framework in the preparation of financial statements of entities. It also addresses the analysis and interpretation of financial statements.
Explorations in Contemporary Research
You will gain knowledge and understanding of research methodologies and their application in relevant and current accounting and finance academic research after studying this theme.
Audit and Assurance*
This topic involves critically examining the purpose, functions and role of Audit and Assurance. You will come to understand the financial controls operating in a business and how they relate to the role of Audit and Assurance in the context of the financial statements. Thetopic reviews current regulations and professional responsibilities. You will also gain an understanding of the practicalities of auditing and the processes involved in delivering a robust audit service.
Corporate and Business Law*
After studying Corporate and Business Law, you will gain an understanding of, and be able to evaluate, the relevant rules and principles that comprise the legal framework within which businesses in England and Wales must operate. You will be able to apply those rules and remedies in order to identify the legal rights, restrictions and remedies available to those engaged in the operation of such businesses (recognising the desirability of seeking further specialist legal advice where necessary).
Year Three
Advanced Accounting and Accountability
You will gain an understanding of the narrative under-pinning corporate financial reports, including creative accounting, corporate governance, risk management and you will consider some of the ethical issues in business. You will develop skills in interpreting financial statements, understanding cash flows and gain experience in compiling consolidated financial statements.
Performance Management
This theme builds on your knowledge of Management Accounting and develops your understanding of how to analyse the performance of businesses using both financial and non-financial data across a range of sectors.
Research or Project
A research piece or project in an area of your choice.
Taxation*
This topic gives you a detailed understanding of business taxation, individual taxation and corporation tax in the United Kingdom. You will also study how to design a country’s tax system.
Financial Management*
Analysing risk management techniques, as well as Business and Asset evaluation, you will consider corporate restructures and working capital management techniques.
Research Dissertation*
A research dissertation in an area of your choice.

Tuition fees
The tuition fees for the 2022/23 academic year are £9,250 for full-time undergraduate courses.
If you are a student from the Isle of Man or the Channel Islands, your tuition fees will also be £9,250.
The University reserves the right to increase Home and EU Undergraduate and PGCE tuition fees in line with any inflationary or other increase authorised by the Secretary of State for future years of study.
Additional costs
We advise you to consider the cost of the books that will be suggested as key reading/reference books. All books will be available in the library, but in limited numbers. We suggest setting aside around £200 for purchases.
If after graduating you want to pursue professional accreditation with the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA), you will be required to pay ACCA a registration fee and a fee for each exemption requested. More details about these fees are available on the ACCA website.
