    About your course

    Designed specifically for qualified Nursing Associates, our BSc (Hons) Adult Nursing top-up degree will lead you to qualify as a Registered Nurse in 18 months.

    You will join the course at Level 5, and study alongside second year (Level 5) students on the standard three-year BSc (Hons) Nursing programmes.


    Degree Apprenticeship Route

    Adult nurses care for adults of all ages in both acute and long term care. On the BSc (Hons) Nursing (Adult), you will gain the skills, experience and confidence to be an effective healthcare professional, with particular aptitude in key areas such as caring, counselling, managing, teaching and interpersonal skills, which are essential to improving patient care and quality of life.

    You will have plenty of opportunities for hands-on practice within a variety of settings including the traditional hospital environment and also the community such as nursing homes, home environments, clinics and treatment rooms, and our new simulated clinical practice suites. This experience will give you vital skills in assessing, planning, delivering and evaluating patient care and needs.

    You will also become proficient in measuring and recording physiological observations, moving and handling, resuscitation, drug administration, communication skills and personal hygiene delivery so that by the time you qualify, you will have the confidence to deal with real patients in the NHS, private and voluntary settings right from the minute you start your professional career.

    If you are excited by the idea of seeing how health care delivery works in other countries, there may be opportunities to study in other countries. 

    What you will study on this degree

    All of your modules are Core. This means that all students on the course will study them.

    Modules are designated core or option in accordance with professional body requirements, as applicable, and LJMU's Academic Framework Regulations.

    Whilst you are required to study core modules, optional modules are also included to provide you with an element of choice within the programme. The availability of optional modules may vary from year to year and will be subject to meeting minimum student numbers.

    Core modules

    Behaviour Change to Prevent Ill Health
    20 credits

    The aim of this module is to understand the nurse's role in raising awareness of risk factors and supporting behaviour change.

    Partnership Working and Care Co-Ordination in Adult Nursing
    20 credits

    This module will examine strategies and approaches for service improvement in adult nursing. In addition to the contact hours above there are 160 private study hours. 99 hours are guided, this includes online and assessment preparation. 

    Developing Practice for Adult Nursing 2
    20 credits

    The aim of this module is to build upon 'developing practice in Adult nursing 1' to further reinforce your engagement with knowledge, attitudes, values and skills associated with safe and effective care. You will complete 337.5 practice hours which will include practice placement learning and simulated practice learning, in accordance with the programme plan. 

    Level 6

    Core modules

    The Proficient Adult Nurse
    40 credits

    This module will develop your engagement with a range of values, attitudes and skills that underpin safe and effective clinical practice to support their development as an independent practitioner. You will complete 420 practice hours that will include practice placement learning and simulated practice learning, in accordance with the programme plan. 

    The Proficient Adult Nurse 2
    20 credits

    This module will build upon experiences from 'The proficient adult nurse 1' to consolidate your engagement with a range of values, attitudes and skills that underpin safe and effective clinical practice to support their development as an independent practitioner. You will complete 450 practice hours that will include practice placement learning and simulated practice learning, in accordance with the programme plan. 

    Co-ordinating Safe, Quality Adult Care
    20 credits

    This module will establish how complex care be delivered safely for in adult nursing. In addition to the contact hours above there are 160 private study hours. 85 hours are guided, this includes online and assessment preparation.

    Leadership, Management and Supervision
    20 credits

    This module supports your journey towards leadership roles in nursing. Through interactive lectures, discussions, group tutorials, action learning workshops, private study, and practice, you will foster practical skills of reflection, personal development planning, empowerment, teamwork and leadership.

    Professional Practice and Co-ordinating Complex Care in Adult Nursing
    20 credits

    This module will prepare you for the management of the care of adult patients with complex needs. In addition to the contact hours above there are 160 private study hours. 85 hours are guided, this includes online and assessment preparation. 

    Teaching and work-related learning

    Excellent facilities and learning resources

    -We adopt an active blended learning approach, meaning you will experience a combination of face-to-face and online learning during your time at LJMU. This enables you to experience a rich and diverse learning experience and engage fully with your studies.  Our approach ensures that you can easily access support from your personal tutor, either by meeting them on-campus or via a video call to suit your needs.

    As a nursing student, you will be required to complete 4,600 hours of which 50% will be theory and 50% in clinical practice. This means that you will have seven weeks holiday a year, and may have to attend sessions outside the normal university hours of 9am to 5pm.

    Blocks of academic study can be up to six weeks depending on what point in the programme you are at. You will work 30 hours a week in clinical practice and will have a weekly study day of 7.5 hours. 
    Underpinning all aspects of the training offered is a commitment to ethical and anti-oppressive values, values and principles of the NHS Constitution and Professional Body requirements.

    Work-based Learning

    -This includes work-based learning in primary care, nursing homes and acute settings, and give you an invaluable opportunity to learn from experienced practitioners while experiencing the full 24-hour working pattern. 

    Most of your placements will be in the local area but we cannot guarantee that they will all be close to your home. In addition there is work related learning once per year in our simulated practice experience. 

    All students will undertake one simulated formative placement per year, which is a key feature of the programme. This placement occurs within the LJMU purpose build clinical skills suites and allows for interprofessional learning to take place, in addition to specific simulated learning.

    Entry Requirements

    Applicants require a High School Certificate (Tawjihi) plus 1 year of further study to include: Community College Certificate / Diploma / General Vocational Secondary Education Certificate For entry onto the first year. A-level applicants require 104 points are required and students studying the International Baccalaureate Diploma will need to achieve 27 points or more for first year entry.

    Career

    Graduate with eligibility to apply to the NMC register and start work as a band 5 nurse.

    With the BSc (Hons) Adult Nursing, you will enjoy exciting career opportunities both in the UK and have the opportunity to participate in overseas placements.

    Successful completion of the course allows you to apply for registration on the Nursing and Midwifery Council register. This can lead to careers in the health sector at home or abroad and in the private and voluntary sectors.

    How to Apply

    All applications for September 2023 entry must be submitted by Friday 30 June 2023. Once an offer has been made, applicants will have a further 28 days to pay a deposit for the course. Failure to do so, may result in your offer being cancelled.

    When you apply to LJMU via UCAS, your ability to achieve the entry criteria is just one area that we take into account. Another important part of the application form is your personal statement, which is an opportunity for you to tell us about yourself. You should include your skills, relevant interests and hobbies, along with why you want to study the course. 

    Any work experience or voluntary work should be mentioned here, but don’t just state where and when, tell us about what you have learned and why you enjoyed it. We are looking for motivation, commitment and enthusiasm. This is your opportunity to convince us why you would like to study on the course you have chosen at LJMU.

    In addition to satisfying the general academic criteria, you will also need to demonstrate your English language proficiency. The English language level required is also listed alongside each course in this. You are advised to check our online course information for detailed and up-to-date entry requirements for specific degrees.

    If you miss the deadline for applications, don’t worry, as applications for many courses can be made through UCAS Clearing.

    Once you have applied UCAS sends the applications to us and we pass them to the Admissions Officer responsible for selecting students for each course. Every application is considered very carefully and you will be notified by UCAS whether or not your application has been successful.
