    About

Advanced Quantitative Methods in Psychology (Certificate) – STEM Designated Degree Program

The Department of Psychology is offering a new Graduate Certificate in Advanced Quantitative Methods in Psychology in response to a growing need from the job market for a STEM-educated work force and the emerging guidelines from the American Psychological Association that emphasize the scientific nature of behavioral studies.

The ideal candidate for the Graduate Certificate in the Advanced Quantitative Methods in Psychology would be a student already enrolled in a graduate program who is interested in strengthening their knowledge in advanced statistics, modern data analytic techniques, and quantitative methodology in the social sciences. Most students enrolled in this certificate program will be graduate students enrolled in other psychology programs, but the Certificate program welcomes graduate students in other departments who wish to improve their quantitative skills and career prospects as well.

The objective of this Graduate Certificate is to train individuals in the interpretation, application, and design of advanced statistical methods and their applications in the behavioral and social sciences. Four learning objectives will enable students to:

    • Demonstrate a depth of knowledge in quantitative research methods and advanced statistical techniques.
    • Competently plan research projects and perform empirical data analysis.
    • Gain training in data science and programming languages that are in high demand in the labor market (e.g., R, Python).
    • Write and present original research reports based on data-analytic findings OR teach statistical material to undergraduate students.

The demand for quantitative methods and data-analytic skills are evident in private industry by the proliferation of jobs in these areas over the past decade. According to LinkedIn, there was 650% job growth in data science and statistics jobs from 2012 to 2017. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates a further 11.5 million new jobs by 2026. Trained behavioral graduate students who have skills in both research methodology as well as quantitative techniques are particularly qualified for research and data science positions.

Advanced training in quantitative methodology in psychology is in high demand in academia as well. Advanced quantitative methods training often signals that a scholar is equipped to carry out a research program that is cutting edge and advancing scientific theory and knowledge, which increases the probability of securing external funding. Furthermore, literacy in advanced quantitative methods increases the attractiveness of a CV/resume because it means that job candidates can handle teaching advanced statistical courses. Taken together, our graduate students will have stronger job applications and will be able to further distinguish themselves from other job applicants with an accompanying graduate certificate in advanced quantitative methods in psychology.

    Requirements

    Entry Requirements

    Transcripts and Transcript Evaluation

A requirement of your application is to list the name of every institution that you’ve previously attended or are currently attending, regardless of the length of attendance.

If you are an undergraduate student in your last term, you may upload an unofficial copy of your current transcript. Upon acceptance into a graduate program, a final transcript indicating that you have completed your undergraduate studies will be required before the start of classes.

The Office of Graduate Admissions does not evaluate international transcripts. In lieu of a transcript, applicants with a non-U.S. degree must submit a course-by-course evaluation of their academic record. We accept evaluations from any NACES member organization. If you do not have or plan to obtain a transcript evaluation, you should upload your unofficial transcripts to your portal for further consideration*.

OFFICIAL transcript evaluations sent directly from the NACES-approved company are required.

*Note: The Office of Graduate Admissions will offer a limited number of free transcript evaluations for eligible F-1 and J-1 visa applicants. After the application is completed (with exception of the transcript evaluation), students will receive an email with their next steps to request this service. We will review all requests received to determine eligibility and will notify the applicants accordingly. Note that, due to a number of factors, we cannot guarantee this service will be provided to all students who request it.

    GRE/GMAT Test Scores

The GRE/GMAT is NOT required for many of Montclair State University’s graduate programs. Consult our programs of study page to see if the exam is required for your major.

Programs that do ask for submission of a GRE/GMAT exam will often offer waivers for students who meet specific criteria. Visit the GRE/GMAT exam waiver page to view test exemption criteria.

The institutional codes for reporting are as follows:

    • GRE: 2520
    • GMAT: full time MBA: 1T2-NK-86
    Letters of Recommendation

The majority of graduate programs require two (2) letters of recommendation. Some programs may not require any, and some may require as many as three. As requirements vary by major, please consult our programs of study page for information specific to your program.

    • During the application process, the online system will give you the option to provide the contact information of your recommenders in the recommendations tab of your application. You will also have the opportunity to add their contact information after you submit in your application portal. They will then receive instructions from Graduate Admissions on how to submit their recommendations electronically.
    • Whenever possible, recommendations should be from professors in your undergraduate and graduate field of study who are familiar with your academic work.
    • If a significant amount of time has passed since you graduated, recommendation letters can be submitted from employers, supervisors or other professionals who can comment on your background, work experience, and motivation to succeed.
    • Friends, family members, or fellow students are not considered appropriate sources for a recommendation letter.
    Additional Supplemental Application Requirements

Some programs may require submission of additional application items including a resume, a statement of purpose (SOP), an essay, an audition, or a portfolio. As requirements vary by major, please consult our programs of study page for information specific to your program.
