    Requirements

    Open to registered health care professionals in Nursing, Midwifery, Medicine, and Clinical Therapies or other allied disciplines.

    Applicants who are practising health care professionals must provide evidence of current registration with the relevant professional regulatory body (e.g. the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (active registration), the Irish Medical Council, the Health & Social Care Professions Council (or equivalent regulatory body for pharmacists, occupational therapist, podiatrists, speech and language therapists etc.)) Applicants from allied disciplines must provide evidence of professional certification, where appropriate.

    Applicants who are under 23 years of age must satisfy the minimum entry requirements as for the Degrees in Nursing or Midwifery, as set out here

    Admission to the module(s) will be subject to internal university approval processes on the recommendation of the Head of School.

    Applicants for Nursing and Midwifery CPD modules who do not hold an up-to-date IELTS certificate showing the requisite Academic Board approved CM&H scores must demonstrate evidence of appropriate work experience within an English language environment for at least the previous 2 years.

    These modules will not necessarily run unless minimum recruitment targets of 10 students are achieved.

    The fee for this module is €900. There is also a €35 application fee.

    Delivered in Gerontological Nursing (Blended - Face/On-line)

    Module Objective: To integrate theoretical gerontological specialist knowledge with physical assessment skills to inform the student's clinical decision making and person-centred care planning for an older person living with complexity.
    To promote an enhanced professional identity, values and capability of gerontological nurses to work within and across boundaries to achieve person-centre care and dignity for older people and challenge ageist or regressive practices and policies.

    Module Content: Psychological and social theories of ageing; national and international ageing policy; biological theory of ageing including accumulative deficits model, frailty and sarcopenia; psychological resilience and assets model of care; long-term condition clinical guidelines & modification in the context of ageing; multimorbidity and polypharmacy; Comprehensive geriatric assessment and management; history taking and fundamental physical examination skills across major body systems; MDT care planning and interagency co-ordination; carer support and well-being.

    Learning Outcomes: On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:

    • Critically reflect on ageing theories from bio-psychosocial perspectives and in the context of national and international policies on ageing.
    • Locate and critically apply relevant evidence and clinical guidelines on active and the health ageing and management of complexity in an older person including frailty, long-long term conditions, multimorbidity, polypharmacy.
    • Critically apply a comprehensive assessment and management model that balances the older person’s resilience while recognising medical, functional, psychological, social and environmental factors.
    • Demonstrate foundation level history taking and physical assessment skills across major body systems (respiratory, cardiovascular, gastrointestinal, sensory and musculoskeletalto inform clinical decision making and care planning.
    • Provide a critical analysis of integrated care planning that demonstrates multidisciplinary, inter-agency co-ordination, formal and informal supports, including carer supports to optimise health and quality of life and transitions in care.
    • Critically debate the contribution of gerontological specialist nurses to supporting dignity and respect at the individual level, challenge fragmented services and operating practice, actively participate in local and national development of age-attuned services and policy.

    Assessment: Total Marks 200: Continuous Assessment 200 marks (e-tivities - 20 marks; Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) - 40 marks; Case Study Essay (1,500 words) - 140 marks).
