    American Sign Language/English Interpreting

    About

American Sign Language, a form of communication used primarily in deaf communities, is a language in which people use their hands and other body parts to converse without sound. The American Sign Language and English Interpreting program (ASL) at Valdosta State prepares students to interpret American Sign Language in a variety of settings. There is a high demand for qualified interpreters, who play a vital role in assisting those who are deaf and hard of hearing and serve a critical role in the educational system.
The American Sign Language interpreting curriculum can be completed on campus or online utilizing distance education classrooms, video conferencing and webcam. Students learn interpreting and transliteraآtion skills and gain in-depth knowledge of the field and an understanding of the interpreter's role within the school system. To enhance the classroom experience, students participate in field labs, practiآcum experiences and internships within local public school settings. Upon completion of the ASL degree program, students qualify to take state and national evaluations for interآpreter proficiency.

    Entry Requirements

Students entering the University directly from high school must maintain a GPA of 2.0 or better on all course work undertaken in order to continue as Theatre and Dance majors. If in any given semester a student's overall GPA falls below 2.0, the student will have one semester (fall or spring) to bring it back up to or above 2.0. If the overall GPA remains below 2.0 for two consecutive semesters, the student will be requested to change majors. Any student who fails to respond to that request will automatically be transferred to an undeclared major status. Students who enter the University as transfer students who wish to continue a major in Theatre or Dance must have a GPA of at least 2.0 on all course work undertaken.
