    About

    This Applied Art course focuses on the high-quality craft skills needed to be a professional maker. Develop your material and design skills through ceramics, metal, jewellery and mixed media.

    Students will:

    • Be able to understand the importance of high-quality making, originality and how to generate personal responses to materials and processes.
    • Develop creativity, innovation and entrepreneurial skills.
    • Be able to combine their conceptual and technical skills in applied arts with the professional skills needed to be a successful maker.
    • Develop interpersonal skills through collaborative projects and teamwork.
    • *Study a course that is part of a subject area rated 1st in the UK for satisfaction with assessment, 2nd in Wales for career prospects and 3rd in Wales for satisfaction with teaching and satisfaction with the course in the Design and Crafts subject league tables, The Guardian University Guide 2022.
    • *Study a course that is part of a CHA3 subject group ranked 1st in the UK for the teaching on my course and 6th in the UK and 1st out of Welsh universities for overall satisfaction in the National Student Survey 2022.

    Develop your material and design skills through Ceramics, Metal, Jewellery and mixed media with this Applied Arts programme. Work on live projects, exhibitions and commissions giving you confidence for your future career.

    YEAR 1 (LEVEL 4)

    Introduces you to the breadth of materials and techniques within the Applied Arts, where you have the opportunity to work across all the material areas, experimenting with glass, ceramics, metal and mixed media.

    YEAR 2 (LEVEL 5)

    Expands your making skills within your main material choice, developing a depth of knowledge and understanding about materials and craft skills and allowing you to advance your own creative style. The key professional skills of understanding market, publicity and costings are also developed through practical projects.

    YEAR 3 (LEVEL 6)

    Allows you to realise your ideas in the direction of your choice, with students developing their own individual themes to produce collections, demonstrating high-quality making skills and innovative design solutions.

    For entry onto an Undergraduate programme, applicants require:

    Community college diploma with 65% minimum

    Or, holders of a a Tawjihi 65%+ average plus a recognised foundation programme

    Or, holders of the International Baccalaureate Diploma with 27 points or more will be considered for direct admission to Bachelor degree courses

    Our graduates have careers in a wide range of areas including education, restoration work, museums and retail. A proportion go on to work in or set up their own galleries.

    The majority of our graduates work in applied arts businesses, become self-employed as artists, technicians, designer craftspeople, and often set up their own making businesses.

    Further study opportunities are also available at PG Diploma Advanced Professional Practice, MA or PGCE level.

    How to Apply

    Application stage

    If you are an international student who requires a Student visa, your application should be made via Centurus. You will need to fill in your details, upload any documents relevant to your application and confirm your student declaration.

    If you are applying for a research degree, such as MPhil or PhD, you should click here.

    The documents that need to be uploaded are:

    • A scanned copy of your passport (including personal details page).
    • Certificates and transcripts showing your academic progression so far.
    • Certified translations of overseas certificates and transcripts where the document is not in English or Welsh.
    • An acceptable English language certificate.
    • Copy of Tuberculosis screening if you are a resident in any of the countries listed. More information about Tuberculosis screening can be found here.
    • 1 academic reference letter (further references might be required).
    • Evidence of finances to pay first year’s full tuition fee and to cover UKVI maintenance requirements.
    • Evidence of work experience (where relevant).

    If you have previously studied in the UK, you are also required to provide the extra documents listed below:

    • A scanned copy of the passport page showing entry clearance in to the UK and return overseas.
    • Copies of any UK visas you have previously held.
    • Copies of Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) documents / visa letters for all previous studies undertaken in the UK.
    • Copies of any visa / ATAS refusal letters (if applicable).
    • Copies of any visa / ATAS appeal or administrative review letters (if applicable).
    • Evidence of any removal / deportation / detention notices (if applicable).
