    Applied Immersive Technology (Creative Industries)

    About

    Immersive technology

Explore our postgraduate courses in immersive technology and hear from our academic staff.

You gain a creative and technical understanding of events production, audience experience and approaches to the creation of artistic content for immersive experiences, learning how to apply immersive technologies to creative productions.

The course offers a unique combination of content in site-specific virtual sets and production design, games development and production, and immersive digital technologies such as virtual reality and augmented reality. Project based learning allows you to experiment with early prototypes and work-in-progress showings. A range of underpinning theories and models steer the content of creative immersive work towards a real engagement with a new type of audience, viewer, gamer or participant.

You are taught by experienced professionals who are involved in international research and development in immersive production and virtual technologies, working with global partners and producing international outputs.

Develop the knowledge and skills to apply immersive interactive technologies in the creative sector, including games, animation, visual effects, film, television, marketing, public relations, journalism, graphic design and production design.

    Core modules

    Augmented Reality

You are introduced to the fundamental concepts and approaches utilised in the development of AR solutions, from exploring existing development tools and environments to design considerations and deployment platforms.

    Immersive Reality Project

This deep dive into the research, development and production of an immersive reality product, asks you to build on existing knowledge and experience to create interactive immersive content, in the form of a professional quality immersive reality product.

    Immersive User Experience

You explore how users interact with immersive experiences through user experience design, interface design and emergent technology. You look at spatial consideration in immersive design, best practice considerations, personal and virtual spaces and how this relates to interactive narrative structures and development.

    Interactive Entertainment

You explore the use of immersive development tools in entertainment, play and games, investigating concepts of play and narrative driven design to develop a small prototype project. You look at engagement and participation in the commercial leisure sector and investigate intrinsic and extrinsic motivation in immersive interactive experiences. By investigating existing established examples in the field, you develop your own narrative project in immersive space and propose a prototype experience designed for a defined commercial entertainment audience.

    Master's Project: Applied Immersive Technology

You undertake a major, in-depth, individual study in an aspect of your course. Your project is drawn from appropriate commercial, industrial, artistic, or research-based problem areas and involves research and investigation in relevant aspects of a specific area of study followed by the production of a major deliverable portfolio of relevant practice-based materials from the area of applied immersive technology. You also produce a written report that contextualises and critically evaluates your final outputs.

    Virtual Production Management

You investigate immersive technology tools, including virtual reality VR, AR and mixed reality (MR), to develop creative immersive productions. These could include games development, 360 video production, app development, creative animation, and immersive media. You learn how to take a specification, identify and apply the necessary tools to deliver an immersive reality product to a client. You focus on the production pipeline, planning, role identification and allocation, and the development of a creative artifact with a defined audience and timeline.

    Virtual Reality

You undertake a multidisciplinary group project where you apply your individual area of expertise to the platform of Virtual Reality (VR) or Augmented Reality (AR). You focus on integrating and applying existing skills from multiple disciplines and applying them in a VR context. You research and develop a VR, AR or immersive experience. You research, analyse, and evaluate a broad range of VR and AR systems, as well as learning how to synthesise and reflect on your own contribution for immersive systems within your discipline.
Your assessment is 100% ICA, with a group project including product demonstration and actual immersive experience, an individual portfolio and individual written report.
