    Career

Chartered Architectural Technologists are recognised as being qualified to negotiation and manage the development of construction projects. And focuses on the technical side of architecture, rather than the creative.

The course covers the range of design problems that architectural technologists work on, including commercial, industrial, retail, leisure and residential projects and these may involve new-build, adaptation, restoration maintenance or interiors.

There is recognition within industry of the quality of the course and its progression to career pathways. A number of students over the years have won regional and national awards. This course combines the academic expertise of industry active staff with visiting lectures form practice and professional bodies.

Hays' UK Salary & Recruiting Trends 2023 lists recently qualified Architectural Technologists as the number one career with the highest pay rises in the construction and property industry.

Architectural Technology is a multi-disciplinary field and so you will find yourself studying alongside students from different courses, on certain modules. However, detailed design is fundamental to architectural practice and at each level of the course there is a design project module.

These modules have been designed to help you develop your detailed design skills and creativity. The design projects will also help you to draw on the knowledge from your other modules and identify where you need to augment your study through directed self-study/research. In essence these modules will act as integrating modules and provide you with the experience and the challenge that will distinguish you from other construction students as architectural technologists.

At first you will be expected to work on a range of design projects, involving different building types including: residential, commercial, industrial, retail and leisure. Some projects will be new build, some will be conversion projects. Later in the course you will have the opportunity to specialise. These modules are studio-based and involve individual and team projects.

All apprentices sit an independent end-point assessment (EPA), assessing all the knowledge, skills and behaviours you’ve learnt throughout your apprenticeship.

It’s taken at the very end of the on-programme phase of training when your employer, or in some cases your training provider, is satisfied that you meet the “gateway” criteria to take the assessment.

End-point-assessments are graded and you’ll get an apprenticeship certificate after you’ve successfully completed your EPA. It’s a test that’s valued by current and future employers.

The University has many learning resources both on and off campus – including online access to other libraries and information services (which may be closer to you) through schemes such as Sconul Access and an Inter-Library Loans Service.

There’s also an information skills training programme, IT help and advice from LIS Customer Support.

And you’ll be able to remotely link to the university’s network account, the library's electronic resources and some core software applications.
